Richard W. Riley

The Riley Institute

The Riley Institute at Furman was founded by former two-term South Carolina Governor and U.S. Education Secretary Richard W. Riley. It advances social and economic progress by developing leaders for a diverse society, hosting expert speakers to broaden perspectives on critical issues, and supporting public education.

Now in its 23rd year – and as Riley ’54 looks to his 90th birthday this coming January – the institute continues to engage present and future leaders and foster knowledge through research on the state’s central challenges.

In The Riley Institute’s history, there have been:

  • 17
    ANNUAL FURMAN STUDENT DELEGATIONS
  • 297
FIRST-YEAR FURMAN STUDENTS IN THE ADVANTAGE SCHOLARS SUMMER PROGRAM
  • 309
    STUDENTS ON THE ADVANCE TEAM
  • 154
SOUTH CAROLINA TEACHERS IN TEACHERS OF GOVERNMENT
  • 2,475
    DIVERSITY LEADERS INITIATIVE (DLI) GRADUATES

The university’s new space in downtown Greenville serves students, faculty, staff and alumni.

Coming to Furman, I was clueless about what my future held, unable to imagine myself in a career or even to choose a major. That was until I was introduced to sustainability science, a discipline that has allowed me to develop my passion for both people and the environment simultaneously.
