Employee Return Schedule

In order to ensure necessary COVID19-related safety measures, Furman will take a phased approach to employees resuming on-campus work activities. Please see our Wave Assignments and Approval procedures.

Wave 1: Limited Admissions and Limited Library Staff Only

June 1-June 21

Goal:

Admissions counselors will begin giving scheduled campus tours to individual prospective students and families.  Limited library staff will make resources available to faculty and staff on a limited schedule for pick-up only.

Conditions:

  • Essential staff only on campus.
  • Vast majority of faculty and staff working remotely.
  • Campus closed to public and visitors (Admissions exception).

Employees Returning to Campus:

  • Limited Admissions staff
  • Limited Library staff

Wave 2: Research and Operations Ramp-Up

June 22-July 12

Goal:

Reestablish the primary physical presence of on-campus faculty research, including individual office and laboratory access and use. Use this wave to test return implementation and identify challenges and opportunities.

Conditions:

  • Research facilities and labs are reactivated.
  • Other buildings and key operations are reactivated
  • Remote summer classes.
  • Majority of faculty and staff working remotely.
  • Limited custodial staff focused on cleaning and disinfecting. Limited ability to perform other regular services.
  • Campus closed to public and visitors (Admissions exception).

Employees Returning to Campus:

  • Members of the Senior Administrative Team and Fall Planning Team as appropriate.
  • VPs may prioritize some employees to return to campus for specific functions, provided that such employees are performing mission-critical operations that require access to on-campus resources.
  • All other employees must still receive permission from VP for periodic access to campus.

Wave 3: Fall Preparations

July 13-August 12

Goal:

Core campus educational and support functions return to plan and prepare for students to return to campus.

Conditions:

  • Early student arrivals start on July 27.
  • Summer furloughs end on July 31.
  • Most campus buildings open and functioning under social distancing and other safety measures adopted by Furman.
  • Custodial staff focused on cleaning and disinfecting. Limited ability to perform other regular services.
  • Remote summer classes.
  • Campus remains closed to public and visitors (Admissions exception).

Employees Returning to Campus:

  • Larger proportion of employees resume on-campus work activities to support mission-critical operations.
  • Some employees that are able to effectively work remotely will continue to do so.

Wave 4: Full Return

August 13

Goal:

Safely begin the fall academic semester.

Conditions:

  • Most staff already on campus. All faculty must report by August 13.
  • All campus buildings open and functioning.
  • Loosening restrictions on public and visitors coming uninvited to use outdoor spaces only.
  • Classes start on August 18.

Employees Returning to Campus:

Remaining employees return to campus, excluding employees continuing to work remotely:

  • as a reasonable accommodation and/or
  • with the permission of his or her VP/designee.

Additional Return to Work Safety Precautions

  • Social distancing guidelines will be followed.
  • All students and employees are required to wear cloth face coverings (masks) that fully extend over the nose and mouth at all times when in campus buildings unless a specific exception is granted.
  • Cleaning and disinfecting plans in place.
  • Safety signage on campus in place.
  • Physical workspace modifications/configurations in place.

The university will closely monitor the evolving circumstances related to COVID-19, along with rapidly developing scientific knowledge and medical resources, to determine the appropriateness for adjustments and contingencies.
