Workslop is polished slides with vague numbers, long summaries that miss the true main point, and reports that read smoothly but say very little of substance. The researchers found that 40% of US employees had received workslop in just the past month (based on latest results from an ongoing survey), and that fixing or redoing it costs almost two hours per instance.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The core problem isn\u2019t that AI produced the content. It\u2019s that the human judgment that should have shaped and checked it never showed up. The work looks finished but isn\u2019t.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Why this matters beyond the office<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Workslop is a workplace term, but anyone who has read a stack of essays lately will recognize the shape of it: writing that hits every formal marker of a finished essay (complete sentences, transitions, a confident tone) while the actual thinking underneath is thin or absent. That\u2019s the version we see in our courses.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This is also where this month\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/newsletter.furman.edu\/faculty-development-center\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/17\/2026\/09\/Gary-Guillet-TeachingTips.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Teaching Tip<\/a> connects<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Gary Guillet\u2019s piece on in-class assignments is built around a simple principle that we Writing Studies folks also preach: process matters more than a polished final product, and low-stakes grading protects space for students to think out loud without being penalized for it. Workslop is what happens when that process gets skipped entirely and only the finished-looking product remains. The two ideas are really pointing at the same thing from opposite directions.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true}\"> Remember that when you use AI to create materials used in teaching, you should acknowledge that for your students. <a title=\"https:\/\/furman.box.com\/s\/0u3d99gsp9hy9j3hr95u9tcybribmp2q\" href=\"https:\/\/furman.box.com\/s\/0u3d99gsp9hy9j3hr95u9tcybribmp2q\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-outlook-id=\"40691c09-9722-429b-9b01-18d14b80fe0e\"><u>Using AI in Your Teaching<\/u><\/a>\u00a0provides options for acknowledging and\/or citing such AI use.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A skill built to fight it<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">At the September 22 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/furman.box.com\/s\/wv1w6dpynlrnocy8jlwtz0zhz0mkqfkt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">AI in Action session<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, Chris Alvin walked faculty and staff through building <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/furman.box.com\/s\/0l6mitr9gd6leesbe44p6h0y05ibtw0t\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cskills\u201d in BoodleBox<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">: reusable files that encode your own voice, standards, and habits so any bot applies them automatically, without you re-explaining every time. A skill works because it captures how you write and think, not just what task you want done. Generic prompting produces generic output that looks fine on the surface but falls apart under scrutiny. A well-built skill pushes back against that by holding the AI to your actual standards instead of its defaults.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A place to start on assignment design<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">If you\u2019re rethinking an assignment with this in mind, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/furman.box.com\/s\/16n53rxipm0zukzoowgdo80aqsjoc82q\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Assignment-Level AI Use menu<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, developed by Furman\u2019s AI Strategy Task Force (AISTF), is designed for exactly this kind of decision. It walks you through each component of an assignment, understanding the prompt, drafting, getting feedback, and more, and helps you mark where AI use is off-limits, where it\u2019s fine without disclosure, and where it has to be disclosed.
