(<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lindsaybraman.com\/adult-play-styles\/#quiz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">This quiz<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> can help you find yours.) Brown argues that awareness of our play personality, and a genuine willingness to infuse our lives with some form of play, acts as a mental health safeguard and can improve creativity and innovation (yes, please!)<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">But here&#8217;s the teaching question: how and when does your play personality shine in the classroom? Enter &#8220;play pedagogy&#8221; \u2014 a praxis that helps us reconnect to joy, supports relationships, and amplifies belonging and excitement for learning (Forbes, 2021). Improv&#8217;s first principle \u2014 &#8220;Make your partner look good&#8221; \u2014 begins in attunement, the awareness of others critical to positive emotional connection (Brown, 2009). This begs the question: <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">What would I do differently in my teaching if I weren&#8217;t afraid of looking silly?&#8221;<\/span><\/i><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Recess<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\"> \u2014 A literal 10-minute unstructured break mid-class, mid-meeting, mid-day. Invite students (your colleagues, yourself!) to step outside, doodle, or just sit quietly. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nih.gov\/news-events\/news-releases\/study-shows-how-taking-short-breaks-may-help-our-brains-learn-new-skills\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">A 2021 study<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> found that taking breaks from learning new tasks may improve our capacity for consolidating memories that result in improved learning. Modeling taking breaks in class can help your students see the value of a well-timed brief pause and increases the likelihood that they will add it to their study strategies repertoire.
