You may be celebrating your first shower in several days, navigating insurance claims and conversations with adjusters, anxiously awaiting to hear from loved ones in other hard-hit areas, or finding solace in contributing to relief efforts near and far. As you work to make necessary course adjustments for the remainder of the semester, the following guide prioritizing <\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW114916336 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW114916336 BCX0\">well-being\u2014both students\u2019 and your own\u2014may be helpful.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW114916336 BCX0\" data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">In the book <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nextbigideaclub.com\/magazine\/subtract-untapped-science-less-bookbite\/28351\/\"><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Subtract<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">, <\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Leidy Klotz suggests that our brains are wired to add, and subtraction produces cognitive and affective discomfort due to loss aversion<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u2014<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">a cognitive bias in which we tend to avoid losses more than we seek gains of equal value. One <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/00220485.2022.2144572?casa_token=XhqBjSomVYoAAAAA%3A7ByEXdoozaM-SsgLJesPozIr8wUuiFYeijeyXYjiNi2xr0PF4QZN1dY3eNqUbZs395dAUwR81iLb#d1e2940\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">recent study<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> attempted to leverage loss aversion to motivate students to engage more in an economics class by subtracting rather than adding points to an economics course grade! (Spoiler alert: it kind of worked.)
