--smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 364\/186;\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">Student Opinions of Instruction: How to Solicit Usable Feedback<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>You may have read your student opinion of instruction feedback from last semester as you prepared your syllabi for this semester. \u00a0Because we are all piloting a new question set, we wanted to share some resources for parsing the &#8220;signal&#8221; of SOIs (that is, useful information) from the &#8220;noise&#8221; (that is, the less careful\/helpful \u00a0comments of students who were stressed at the end of last semester when they completed SOIs).<\/p>\n<p>When reflecting on SOIs, we recommend any of the strategies below:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/blogs\/gradhacker\/how-deal-negative-teaching-evaluations\">Study evaluations with a trusted partner<\/a> as Natascha Chtena (Education and Information Studies at UCLA) suggests.<\/li>\n<li>In our First Year @ Furman series, we routinely share <u><a id=\"OWA14dd7c63-8791-e530-792a-92c6ebdc3125\" class=\"OWAAutoLink ContentPasted0\" title=\"https:\/\/www.wiley.com\/en-us\/network\/education\/instructors\/teaching-strategies\/5-strategies-to-manage-the-hurt-of-student-evaluations\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wiley.com\/en-us\/network\/education\/instructors\/teaching-strategies\/5-strategies-to-manage-the-hurt-of-student-evaluations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"4\" data-ogsc=\"\">these strategies for reviewing SOI feedback;<\/a><\/u><span class=\"xcontentpasted0\"><span class=\"ContentPasted0\">\u00a0<a id=\"OWA5f8b34f0-9a91-5abf-8a76-9a5057f2c063\" class=\"OWAAutoLink ContentPasted0\" title=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1ZmV9vcEhvrZv9nuUiLiIzgpPmJeRdgud\/edit?usp=sharing&amp;ouid=108277143570282265600&amp;rtpof=true&amp;sd=true\" href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1ZmV9vcEhvrZv9nuUiLiIzgpPmJeRdgud\/edit?usp=sharing&amp;ouid=108277143570282265600&amp;rtpof=true&amp;sd=true\">this worksheet<\/a><\/span><\/span> developed by the FDC may also help you sort &#8220;signal&#8221; from &#8220;noise&#8221;.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As you might imagine, helping students provide specific, actionable, and kind feedback at the <em>end\u00a0<\/em>of the course actually begins the <em>first week of class.<\/em>\u00a0 Several recent studies document how opinion or evaluation instruments are<a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/news\/2019\/05\/20\/fighting-gender-bias-student-evaluations-teaching-and-tenures-effect-instruction\"> flawed<\/a>, however, we&#8217;ve collected a few strategy-rich resources for minimizing this phenomena below:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>While dated, this\u00a0<em>Faculty Focus\u00a0<\/em>article<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facultyfocus.com\/articles\/faculty-development\/three-steps-to-better-course-evaluations\/\"> provides 3 steps to better course evaluations<\/a> from the start of the semester.<\/li>\n<li>Share with students early in the semester how you have modified your course design based on specific, actionable student feedback from the previous semester.<\/li>\n<li>Terry, biologist at Cal State Dominguez Hills<a href=\"https:\/\/smallpondscience.com\/2014\/02\/24\/avoiding-bad-teaching-evaluations-tricks-of-the-trade\/\"> offers these specific strategies<\/a> for creating a classroom environment that promotes meaningful feedback from students that translate across disciplines.<\/li>\n<li>This University of Iowa Teaching Center post helps instructors scaffold<a href=\"https:\/\/ace.uiowa.edu\/encourage-students-give-constructive-feedback#:~:text=Teach%20students%20how%20to%20give,comments%20from%20your%20past%20evaluations.\"> students&#8217; constructive feedback<\/a> formation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Finally, one of the most common promising practices in teaching is to gather student feedback early\/at the mid-term. \u00a0Consider one of the following structures for this purpose:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Share the Furman-piloted <a href=\"https:\/\/furman.box.com\/s\/0ad73t93n2545s0f8khp21pdb6jllg4w\">mid-term survey of teaching behaviors<\/a> that incorporates student reflection on their own learning behaviors.<\/li>\n<li>Become part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/faculty-development-center\/programs-grants\/open-classroom-network\/\">Open Classroom Network<\/a> at Furman.<\/li>\n<li>Request a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/faculty-development-center\/programs-grants\/small-group-instructional-feedback\/\">Small Group Instructional Feedback <\/a>session or <a href=\"https:\/\/furman.az1.qualtrics.com\/jfe\/form\/SV_6swEpK56yqwvuSh\">peer observation<\/a> with the FDC team or one of our peer coaches.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Student Opinions of Instruction: How to Solicit Usable Feedback &nbsp;
