To apply for a leave of absence for a semester, students must complete the following steps:

  1. Contact Financial Aid at [email protected] to determine how taking such a leave may impact any aid, scholarship, or grants you receive.
  2. Contact your Academic Advisor to discuss how this leave will fit into your overall academic progress. (Please note: you do not need to share your reasons for requesting a leave with your advisor. The purpose of this conversation is to help you prepare for your return and successful progress towards you academic goals.)
  3. After completing steps 1 and 2, email the Assistant Academic Dean, Tracy Carner, at [email protected]. Confirm that you have completed the first two steps and wish to take a leave of absence of the desired semester. It is helpful to forward the communication you have had with your Academic Advisor in this email.
  4. Upon receiving approval of the leave, students should notify the Housing and Residence Life Office that they will be taking a leave of absence ([email protected]).

After completing these steps, the leave of absence will be processed and students will be unenrolled from courses for the semester in which they are taking a leave.

During a LOA, students retain access to their Furman email and Workday.

All physical mail will be forwarded to the home address on file. To review your home address, search “My Contact Information” in Workday and look for the “Home (Primary)” address.

To facilitate a successful return in the next semester, students should continue checking their Furman email for important updates and announcements throughout the current semester.

Registering for classes for the following semester:

  • Enrollment Services sends registration information to students via email.
  • Registration windows can be found on the Academic Calendar and in Workday (once assigned, they are on the student’s main page when they login).
  • In advance of the registration window, students must contact their Academic Advisor to discuss their courses and the registration process, and to ensure their advisor removes the registration hold.
  • Students should ensure there are no other holds that would prevent them from registering: in Workday in go to the Academics app > Academic Records > View My Holds.
  • Questions and concerns about the registration process can be directed to Enrollment Services ([email protected]).

Campus Housing:
Students must also notify the Housing and Residence Life Office ([email protected]) of their intentions for the returning semester as early as possible.

If a student is considering extending their leave of absence for a second consecutive semester, they must re-complete the steps steps that are outlined above to submit a new leave of absence request.

  • For an extension through a spring semester, complete the steps in October.
  • For an extension through a fall semester, complete the steps in April.

Students interested in taking classes at a different college or university during their LOA and transferring them to Furman should make themselves aware of important university regulations regarding transfer credits stated in the Undergraduate Academic Catalog. Among those regulations are the following:

  • A student’s last 28 credits must be earned through Furman courses.
  • At least 64 credits must be earned through Furman courses. Therefore, students may apply no more than 64 credits from any combination of other institutions toward the degree.

If you are considering transferring credits from another school, you should take the following steps:

  • Discuss your plans with your Academic Advisor. Your advisor will be able to help you consider your options and explain any important transfer credit requirements.
  • Identify courses that you wish to complete at another institution. Do not assume if or how particular courses taken at other institutions will be applied to your Furman academic progress.
  • Complete the Transfer Credit Authorization form that is found on the Enrollment Services Transfer Credit page.

Submit the Transfer Credit Authorization form to Enrollment Services at [email protected] before enrolling in any courses. Enrollment Services will review your request and let you know if and how the courses will apply towards your academic progress at Furman.

Enrollment Services may request additional information to help determine transfer course equivalencies, such as course descriptions, syllabi, required readings, assignments, etc.

Please contact the Financial Aid Office at [email protected].
