{"id":426,"date":"2022-08-23T15:25:22","date_gmt":"2022-08-23T15:25:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/cothran-center-vocational-reflection\/?page_id=426"},"modified":"2026-08-24T20:44:14","modified_gmt":"2026-08-24T20:44:14","slug":"fall-break","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/cothran-center-vocational-reflection\/student-programs\/fall-break\/","title":{"rendered":"Fall Break"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>During the fall of 2026, the Cothran Center will offer a fall break program called &#8220;Rooted and Restored.&#8221; During this program we will travel to Lake Toxaway, North Carolina, where we will explore the therapeutic value of spending time in the natural environment. We will learn how this can help with managing stress and how the concept of a \u201csense of purpose\u201d contributes to mental and physical wellness. Applications are due by Sept. 18th and can be downloaded here: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/cothran-center-vocational-reflection\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/124\/2026\/08\/Fall-Break-Application-2026.docx\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1139\">Fall Break Application 2026<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Cothran Center has traveled with students to a variety of locations for the Fall Break program. Below is a list of themes and locations since 2021.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>2021 &#8211; <em>Civil Rights Trail<\/em> &#8211; Montgomery, Selma, and Birmingham, ALABAMA<\/li>\n<li>2022 &#8211; <em>Immigration Pilgrimage<\/em> &#8211; Atlanta, Americus, and Lumpkin, GEORGIA (see photo above)<\/li>\n<li>2023 &#8211; <em>Civil Rights Trail<\/em> &#8211; Montgomery, Selma, and Birmingham, ALABAMA<\/li>\n<li>2024 &#8211; <em>Native American Justice<\/em> &#8211; Cherokee, NORTH CAROLINA (rescheduled for January 2025 due to Hurricane Helene)<\/li>\n<li>2025 &#8211; <em>Charleston Journey Toward Justice<\/em> &#8211; Charleston, SOUTH CAROLINA<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Each of these domestic programs has been a powerful, eye-opening opportunity for participants. Below are several student quotes regarding their experiences:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>\u201cI have a different perspective of vocation now. I look at it in a way that makes me more curious about my surroundings and makes me want to get to know the stories behind every individual I meet. Everyone has a story to share that would be reflective in my own life and I appreciate that my eyes have opened up in a new perspective.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>\u201cIn the past I have heard vocation described as \u2018what the world needs from me\u2019. Before the program this didn&#8217;t speak very much to me; however, after some of my experiences, I am thinking about how to incorporate even more activism into my future career, and how can those plans benefit and uplift a wider variety of people.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>\u201cIn regards to vocation, the [Fall Break Program] provided real-life examples of how we can fully integrate our passions and work.
