Blackwell Alumni Service Award: Dr. Lori Housworth \u201991"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Furman University presented a number of major awards at its annual Bell Tower Ball Saturday, Feb. 11.<\/p>\n<p>The event,\u00a0which took place at the Greenville Convention Center, celebrated the accomplishments of members of the Furman community. Several alumni, a community partner and friends of the university were honored for their professional achievements and for their generosity, service and leadership to the university and community.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gordon L. Blackwell Alumni Service Award<br \/>\nDr. Lori Housworth \u201991<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Recognizes an individual who has dedicated extraordinary service to Furman or the greater community, advancing the university\u2019s position as a private institution with a public mission.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-23018 alignleft lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/218\/2023\/02\/Lori-1016-513x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 200px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 200\/300;\" \/>Dr. Lori Housworth is a board-certified physician who specializes in internal medicine and pediatrics. She and her husband, physician Dr. Bill Housworth, have dedicated their medical careers to the improvement of pediatric health care of communities in Cambodia.<\/p>\n<p>Lori and her husband had thriving medical careers in Louisville, Kentucky, when they were compelled to move their young family to Siem Reap, Cambodia, where they worked at Angkor Hospital for Children. Their work focused on training staff and developing and improving programs. Lori worked with the social work team to found a clinic for child victims of sex trafficking\u00a0 and served as a mentor for female pediatricians at the hospital, among other roles.. By the end of their tenure there, they had added an intensive care unit and expanded the hospital\u2019s surgical capabilities to include open heart surgery.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, the Housworths are in Krati\u00e9, Cambodia, at Chenla Children\u2019s Healthcare, continuing to educate and implement life-saving initiatives in eastern Cambodia where the health statistics lag far behind other regions in the country. Lori works tirelessly to care for the people of this region, where focusing on nutrition, infectious disease treatments, and prompt access to medical care can dramatically improve outcomes. She credits her education at Furman for sparking her sense of adventure and her desire to serve the broader community.<\/p>\n<p>Lori graduated\u00a0<em>cum laude<\/em>\u00a0from Furman in 1991 with a Bachelor of Science in chemistry, and was involved with Alpha Delta Pi sorority and Heller Service Corps. She continued her education at the University of Louisville where she earned her medical degree, and at Harvard University where she earned a master\u2019s in public health focusing in international health. Lori and Bill have four children. Their oldest daughter, Rachel, is part of the Furman Class of 2025.
