Tate Denham\u2019s Furman journey began the way many meaningful paths do, with curiosity sparked in the classroom and mentors who encouraged him to lean into it. What started with a single course in environmental economics quickly evolved into a double major in Economics and Business Finance, shaped by interdisciplinary learning, real world application, and a campus culture that rewards ambition.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI chose economics after taking environmental economics with Dr. Taha,\u201d Tate shared. \u201cI realized I loved the modeling aspect and how applicable the logic of economics was to the world around us.\u201d<\/p>\n

That discovery became the foundation for everything that followed.<\/p>\n

Finding Direction Through Academics<\/span><\/h2>\n

As Tate dug deeper into economics, mentorship played a defining role in helping him understand not only what he was studying, but why it mattered.<\/p>\n

\u201cDr. Taha, now my advisor, was very supportive and helped me make sure I knew what kind of major I was getting into,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

When it came time to add Business Finance, Tate was intentional about building complementary skills.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor business, I wanted more applicable hard skills,\u201d he explained. \u201cAfter speaking with Dr. Smythe, I realized I could use my economics background to better understand business concepts. That additional lens helped everything click.\u201d<\/p>\n

At Furman University<\/span><\/span>, Tate found that interdisciplinary thinking was not only encouraged, but expected.<\/p>\n

Learning Beyond Traditional Boundaries<\/span><\/h2>\n

Some of Tate\u2019s most influential learning experiences came from unexpected places.<\/p>\n

\u201cI had a professor in the theatre department help our improv troupe understand how improv applies to business and professional skills,\u201d he shared. \u201cAnother professor helped me connect Buddhist philosophy to financial principles I was learning in business classes.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Even creative writing played a lasting role.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy creative writing professor gave me confidence to live a life I care about and pay closer attention to the world around me,\u201d Tate said.<\/p>\n

These connections reinforced one of Furman\u2019s greatest strengths: learning does not exist in silos.<\/p>\n

Creativity and Research with Real Impact<\/span><\/h2>\n

Tate\u2019s academic experience balanced analytical rigor with creative expression.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was able to write poetry and short stories that were featured<\/a> in Furman\u2019s literary magazine, The Echo<\/em><\/a>,\u201d he shared.<\/p>\n

Alongside creative work, he also engaged in hands on research through the economics department.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat research gave me real project experience and the freedom to discover something on my own,\u201d Tate said. \u201cIt helped me learn how to apply theory in meaningful ways.\u201d<\/p>\n

Internships That Clarified His Path<\/span><\/h2>\n

\"The Tate\u2019s internships played a critical role in shaping his professional direction.<\/p>\n

During his freshman year, he interned at a promotional products company in his hometown of Tampa.<\/p>\n

\u201cI learned a lot about the corporate world and gained real exposure to Excel, analytics, and strategy,\u201d he said. \u201cBut most importantly, I learned what I did not want to do, which was marketing.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

By junior year, his interests had sharpened.<\/p>\n

\u201cI interned as a Financial Analyst Intern at a real estate firm in Midtown Atlanta,\u201d Tate shared. \u201cI had real agency in my work and created value through modeling and analysis. That experience gave me confidence in my analytical abilities.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Community Through Campus Involvement<\/span><\/h2>\n

Tate\u2019s Furman experience was shaped just as much by people as by coursework.<\/p>\n

\"Tate Being in a fraternity provided a strong support system.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt gave me a collection of lifelong brothers and people I know I can rely on,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

But the improv troupe became his closest community.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe troupe builds a space of trust and respect,\u201d Tate shared. \u201cWe created a true family. I know I can rely on every person there, and they know they can rely on me.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

He also found joy and school spirit through Furman Fanatics.<\/p>\n

\u201cI love cheering for sports, and this group gives me a community to do it with while supporting the school I love,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

A Furman Tradition That Stands Out<\/span><\/h2>\n

For Tate, one campus tradition rises above the rest.<\/p>\n

\u201cTag Week,\u201d he said. \u201cIt is such a fun, campus wide game that anyone can participate in. It makes that entire week so much more interesting.\u201d<\/p>\n

When asked to describe the Furman community in three words, Tate did not hesitate: \u201cConstructive. Committed. Unconditional.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Growth in Confidence and Purpose<\/span><\/h2>\n

Furman challenged Tate to grow both personally and academically.<\/p>\n

\u201cI realized my spirituality through philosophy courses that had real life applicability,\u201d he shared. \u201cI became someone I am incredibly proud to be because of leadership and mentorship opportunities.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Academically, he discovered how he learns best.<\/p>\n

\u201cI learned to love learning,\u201d Tate said. \u201cI found my passion and a path forward because of the advisors and resources at Furman.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Life in Greenville <\/span>\"Emma<\/h2>\n

Outside the classroom, Tate enjoys exploring Greenville\u2019s outdoors and local spots with friends.<\/p>\n
