But that is exactly what happened.<\/p>\n<p>What started as a general education requirement turned into a calling. Today, Laken is an Anthropology major with a minor in Women\u2019s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, preparing for a future in social work and nonprofit advocacy.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #582c83\">\u201cI discovered Anthropology while taking an introductory course to fulfill a general education requirement,\u201d she shared. \u201cThat class and my advisor gave me space to rethink what I wanted to do with my career.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>That space to explore became the foundation of her Furman story.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #582c83\"><strong>Finding Purpose Through Academics<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Laken credits her advisor with helping her connect academic study to real world impact.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe brainstormed different ideas and ultimately settled on social work,\u201d she said. <span style=\"color: #582c83\"><strong>\u201cDr. Robinson has been very supportive in helping me apply to graduate schools, and I am excited to use my bachelor\u2019s degree as a steppingstone for my master\u2019s.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Her minor in Women\u2019s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies has allowed her to explore many disciplines across campus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is interdisciplinary and lets me take classes in nearly every department,\u201d she said. \u201cIt really expanded how I think.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #582c83\"><strong>Mentorship Beyond the Classroom<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>For Laken, Furman professors show up far beyond lectures and assignments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of my favorite things about Furman professors is their willingness to meet with students outside of class,\u201d she shared.<\/p>\n<p>One tradition stands out most.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #582c83\"><strong>\u201cEvery semester, my saxophone professor invites the entire studio over to his house for dinner,\u201d she expressed. \u201cWe bond as a group and create lifelong memories. He genuinely cares about each of us and has been an outstanding mentor.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #582c83\"><strong>Turning Research into Real Impact<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>One of Laken\u2019s most meaningful projects combined research, creativity, and advocacy.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #582c83\">\u201cI had the privilege of creating a zine about systemic racism in healthcare for my Anthropology of Race and Ethnicity class,\u201d she shared. \u201cIt was incredibly impactful to interview an executive and hear her perspective, then turn that into a creative presentation.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>That experience helped solidify her passion for nonprofit and advocacy work.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #582c83\"><strong>Creating Her Own Internship Opportunity<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Laken did not wait for an opportunity to appear. She created one.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI successfully proposed an internship idea to the Office of Engaged Learning, and they made it happen by adding it to their database,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #582c83\">With support from the Furman Fellowship, she spent her entire summer working full time with the South Carolina Nurses Association.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat experience deepened my passion for nonprofit work in the advocacy sector,\u201d she shared. \u201cI even extended the internship into the school year for course credit.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #582c83\"><strong>Campus Involvement That Shaped Her Experience<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Laken is deeply involved across campus, wearing many hats that reflect her wide range of interests.<\/p>\n<p>Her involvement includes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Furman Bands<\/li>\n<li>Sigma Alpha Iota International Music Fraternity<\/li>\n<li>Office of Admissions<\/li>\n<li>Furman Libraries<\/li>\n<li>Furman Fanatics Spirit Organization<\/li>\n<li>Riley Institute Lead Team<\/li>\n<li>Pathways Peer Mentor to 30 first year students<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cThese organizations and opportunities have allowed me to connect with incredible people and expand my skills across different disciplines and ideas,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #582c83\"><strong>A Furman Tradition She Will Never Forget<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>If you ask Laken what tradition she looks forward to most each year, her answer is immediate: \u201cMoonlight Breakfast!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #582c83\"><strong>\u201cThere is something so special about having your professors serve you dinner for breakfast the night before exams. The vibes are unbeatable.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>When asked to describe the Furman community in three words, she keeps it simple.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBest. Place. Ever.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #582c83\"><strong>Growth Through the Pathways Program<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-13027 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/admissions-aid\/admission-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/212\/2025\/12\/Beyond-the-Tour-Blog-Images-768x432.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/admissions-aid\/admission-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/212\/2025\/12\/Beyond-the-Tour-Blog-Images-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/admissions-aid\/admission-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/212\/2025\/12\/Beyond-the-Tour-Blog-Images-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/admissions-aid\/admission-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/212\/2025\/12\/Beyond-the-Tour-Blog-Images-1536x864.png 1536w, https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/admissions-aid\/admission-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/212\/2025\/12\/Beyond-the-Tour-Blog-Images-512x288.png 512w, https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/admissions-aid\/admission-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/212\/2025\/12\/Beyond-the-Tour-Blog-Images-1280x720.png 1280w, https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/admissions-aid\/admission-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/212\/2025\/12\/Beyond-the-Tour-Blog-Images.png 1920w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/169;\" \/> Furman challenges Laken both personally and academically.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #582c83\">\u201cThis school gave me space to question my previous assumptions,\u201d she said. \u201cIt helped me grow as both a citizen and a scholar.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>She also credits the Pathways Program with preparing her for life after graduation.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #582c83\">\u201cI am extremely confident in my ability to showcase my strengths in interviews and professional settings,\u201d she said. \u201cI owe that to the Pathways Program.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #582c83\"><strong>Life in Greenville<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>When she is not on campus, Laken enjoys exploring Greenville and supporting local spots.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #582c83\"><strong>Her favorite things to do include:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Visiting Falls Park<\/li>\n<li>Watching a show at the Peace Center<\/li>\n<li>Grabbing Stecca Bread at Swamp Rabbit Cafe<\/li>\n<li>Walking around Furman Lake<\/li>\n<li>Shopping at M Judson Bookstore<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cOn the weekends, I love finding a local coffee shop to do homework and meeting some of the kindest people ever,\u201d she shared.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #582c83\"><strong>What Makes Furman Feel Like Home<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>After living on campus all four years, Laken\u2019s answer is heartfelt and clear.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat makes Furman feel like home is the people,\u201d she said. \u201cLiving on campus all four years helped me make lifelong friends across all ages. Some of the best years of my life happened right here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She describes Furman as the perfect balance.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #582c83\"><strong>\u201cIt has the experience of a large state school with the support of a smaller institution,\u201d she said. \u201cIt can be as little or as big as you need it to be.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #582c83\"><strong>Advice for Future Paladins<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Laken encourages new students to trust the process.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTake your time deciding what you want to pursue,\u201d she explained. \u201cEmbrace uncertainty because that is when you will find your true purpose.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For high school students considering Furman, she offers this advice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLook at how the school markets itself and identify how you see yourself thriving,\u201d she said. \u201cConnect with a student or a professor. <span style=\"color: #582c83\"><strong>Whatever you want to do after college, Furman has the resources to get you there.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When Laken Robinson first stepped onto campus at Furman University, she did not expect a single class to change her entire career direction.
