In this post, Sophia shares five things she wishes she knew before starting her college journey. These insights might help future first-gen Paladins feel a little more at home from day one.

I was nervous to go to college. Being a first-generation student meant I was doing something new, something my parents hadn’t done before and couldn’t give me advice about. Looking back, here are five things I wish I knew about being a first-generation student:

1. There are people here who CARE about you!

At Furman, there is a whole organization of people working behind the scenes to make sure you have the resources that you need and making sure that you are seen.

2. Community matters.

Building a community of people who understand your story is important. That’s why at Furman we have First-Generation Student Alliance (FGSA); an organization run by students to help you meet other First-gens and foster a sense of community.

3. Imposter syndrome is real.

You may feel like you don’t belong, or that you don’t deserve to be celebrated for your accomplishments. This feeling is temporary! You do belong, and even though going to college is intimidating—everyone is trying to figure it out, just like you! Trust in yourself.

4. Use your resources.

Furman has SO MANY WAYS to get help, whether it be financially, mentally, or academically. Make meetings, go to your professor’s office hours, reach out to people whose job is to help you. Don’t wait till you’re struggling to reach out.

5. Have fun, get involved.

There are so many fun activities at Furman! Don’t be afraid to go and have fun. For example, FGSA hosts so many fun events that will allow you to meet new people and make friends with people who understand where you come from!

Going to college isn’t always easy, but it is so rewarding.
