Starting college is an exciting yet overwhelming experience, and as a freshman at Furman University<\/a>, I found myself navigating a new world of academic challenges, campus traditions, and social opportunities. Looking back, there are a few things I wish I had known when I first stepped onto Furman’s beautiful campus, and some insights that could have made my freshman year a little smoother and even more memorable. Here\u2019s what I would share with incoming Furman students:<\/p>\n

1. Embrace Office Hours Early On<\/strong><\/h3>\n

One of the biggest resources that went underutilized during my first semester was office hours. Furman professors are not only experts in their fields but also genuinely invested in their students’ success. Office hours aren\u2019t just for when you\u2019re struggling in class; they\u2019re a chance to dive deeper into topics, ask for advice, and build relationships. A quick visit to a professor\u2019s office could make all the difference in understanding complex material and even open doors for future research opportunities or internships. I wish I had known that office hours are one of Furman\u2019s hidden gems and are as valuable as lectures themselves.<\/p>\n

2. Get Involved Early, But Don\u2019t Overwhelm Yourself<\/strong><\/h3>\n

With so many clubs and organizations<\/a>, it\u2019s easy to get swept up and sign up for every activity that sounds remotely interesting. During the first semester, I joined multiple clubs, thinking I could balance them all. It didn\u2019t take long for me to realize that spreading myself too thin left little time to truly engage with any of them. If I could do it again, I\u2019d focus on two or three activities that align with my interests and gradually branch out if time permits. Furman has incredible organizations like FUASIA<\/a>, the Data Science Club<\/a>, and intramural sports, so there\u2019s something for everyone. Being selective about your involvement helps ensure you\u2019re fully committed and can genuinely contribute to the communities you join.<\/p>\n

3. It\u2019s Okay to Ask for Help<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Adjusting to college life can be challenging, and it\u2019s essential to remember that asking for help is perfectly okay. Furman offers a range of support services, from academic advising to mental health counseling. During my freshman year, I hesitated to reach out, thinking I should handle everything independently. But college is about learning to lean on the support systems around you. The university\u2019s counseling center, peer mentors, and academic resources are all there to help make the transition smoother. Asking for help isn\u2019t a sign of weakness; it\u2019s a sign of growth.<\/p>\n

4. Take Advantage of Greenville<\/strong><\/h3>\n

One of the most rewarding aspects of being a Furman student is having access to Greenville. It is a vibrant town filled with incredible restaurants, parks, and cultural events. I didn\u2019t explore the area much during my first year, focusing instead on campus life. I later realized that Greenville offers a refreshing change of scenery and can be a great escape when college stress builds up. Whether it\u2019s attending a festival downtown, hiking at Paris Mountain<\/a>, or grabbing brunch with friends, Greenville has something for everyone and can make your college experience feel broader than campus alone.\"\"<\/p>\n

5. Enjoy the Journey<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Lastly, don\u2019t rush through freshman year. There\u2019s a tendency to look forward constantly, whether it’s to declare a major, secure an internship, or make long-term plans. But some of the best moments in college come unexpectedly\u2014grabbing late-night food with friends, joining in on spontaneous campus events, or simply enjoying Furman\u2019s scenic campus. Embrace each moment as it comes, savor the small experiences, and remember that freshman year only happens once.<\/p>\n
