Getting on the Grind: A Review of GVL’s Best Coffee Shops

Last updated November 18, 2019

As the days get shorter and the nights in the lib get longer, I’ve found myself frequently turning to coffee as my saving grace. In fact, I’m writing this blog post sipping a peppermint mocha in Starbucks right now- It’s red cup season, friends! Now, I don’t know if y’all are as passionate about coffee as I am, but for all you caffeine fiends out there, here is my review of some of my fav coffee shops in GVL to get on the grind!

Coffee Underground:

Address: 1 E Coffee St, Greenville, SC

Hours: 7am – 10 pm

Personal recommendation: the Sea Turtle latte! It’s a mix of salted caramel & chocolate flavoring. 10/10.

I LOVE Coffee Underground. I mean, it’s located on Coffee Street- how perfect is that?! Some of my very best papers were written in the dark back room of this precious coffee shop. They have a huge menu with really good food and even better coffee! I personally get distracted very easily, but this quiet, cozy, vibe makes focusing very manageable. I highly recommend getting snuggled up on one of their sofas and grinding out that homework that’s been looming!

Methodical Coffee:

Address: 101 N Main St, Greenville, SC

Hours: 7 am – 6 pm

Personal recommendation: Chai tea latte

If you’re looking for a more simplistic approach to coffee, then Methodical is the place for you. If I’m being honest, when I walked in for the first time I didn’t think I was cool enough to even be in the shop. However, after settling in upstairs with my textbooks and notes sprawled out on the table sipping my latte, I felt more at home. Their mugs and plates are beautiful and make for a very aesthetic atmosphere. Also, Methodical roasts their own coffee beans weekly so you can taste the difference! If you have any questions, the staff is so accommodating and sweet and will help you find the ~perfect~ drink for you.

Spill the Beans:

531 S Main St, Greenville, SC

Hours: 6:30 am – 11 pm

Personal recommendation: Spillisimo The Beans which is essentially a really, really good hazelnut latte. Also, their ice cream is my favorite ever. I get vanilla with Nutella and cookie dough mixed in!

I love Spill the Beans for a lot of reasons, but specifically how late they’re open. I’m a night owl and will often have a second wind of productivity late at night. Spill the Beans has lots of purposes: an all-day study sesh, or even a Friday night ice cream date with your best friends. Being located right next to Falls Park allows for a beautiful walk outside to serve as a study break which is a huge added bonus! If you ever want to go on a coffee or ice cream run here please let me know because I will SO join you!

Mountain Goat:

Location: 120 Shaw St, Greenville, SC

Hours: 7 am-9 pm (They’re closed Sunday!!)

There are so many things to love about this coffee shop, but my favorite part is that with every purchase you are helping at-risk youth. 100% of Mountain Goat’s profits go towards helping those in our community by providing free outdoor trips, and mentoring/ job opportunities for middle and high students through their partner organization, GOAT. On top of that great cause, Mountain Goat has great coffee and tea along with a great playlist that isn’t too loud or distracting, but just enough to keep you on task! They also have a fairly small selection of solid bakery options and King of Pops! Although we’re getting into the colder months, if you go when it’s a nice day out, the shop has garage doors that they open! I love everything this coffee shop stands for and highly encourage you to go. You’ll be making a difference in the GVL community while enjoying some great coffee!

Starbucks:

Location: The one closest to Furms is 3230 N Pleasantburg Drive but there are TONS all over GVL!

Hours: The vary but the Pleasantburg one is 5:30-10:30

Personal recommendation: Wow. So many things.  But for this fall / holiday season I would say the Pumpkin Cream Cold Brew, Peppermint Mocha, Caramel Apple Spice, and ofc the classic PSL (Pumpkin Spice Latte).

I feel like Starbucks is like your oldest, most trusted, best friend. It never lets you down, is very consistent, and is always around when you need it. I take a trip to Starbucks at least once a week and am on a first-name basis with my favorite barista. This time of year is great to visit Starbs because it’s so decked out for the holiday season! Their new holiday cups are SO cute and it honestly just makes me happy looking at them. There are so many tasty options and if there’s anything wrong with your order the barista will happily fix it for you to ensure 100% customer satisfaction. Another great perk of Starbucks is the mobile order feature! This makes it so easy to order your favorite drink with a click of a button and an easy pickup process.

There are SO many great coffee shops in Greenville you really can’t go wrong. If you ever want more recommendations about places to grind in GVL, please reach out to me– I’m always here to help.
