<\/h3>\nA Year of Civil Discourse and Democratic Inquiry<\/h3>\n
This year\u2019s record-breaking Dins Day was part of a much larger story. Throughout 2024\u20132025, the Tocqueville Center hosted six two-day lecture events that brought nationally recognized scholars to campus to explore pressing questions of democracy, identity, and public life. Topics ranged from the legacy of Tocqueville himself to the rise of populism, the future of the American family, and the geopolitical challenges facing the U.S. today. Featured speakers included Sarah Gustafson, Olivier Zunz, Esau McCaulley, Melissa Kearney, Brad Wilcox, Sergey Radchenko, and Susan Shirk, among others. Several second-day sessions were co-sponsored with Furman\u2019s On Discourse initiative, encouraging student-led conversations across lines of difference. Together, these events embodied the Center\u2019s mission\u2014and gave Dins Day donors a powerful glimpse of what their support makes possible.<\/p>\n
<\/h3>\nTocqueville’s Insight: Why We Gather<\/h3>\n
Tocqueville warned that democracies often drift toward individualism, isolation, and apathy. But he also saw a remedy: the formation of voluntary associations where individuals, guided by \u201cself-interest rightly understood,\u201d choose to invest in shared institutions that enrich their lives and communities.<\/p>\n
The Tocqueville Program embodies that remedy. Through conversations, courses, and civic engagement, we form students who understand that serious thinking and public-spiritedness are not only compatible\u2014but essential.<\/p>\n
