He introduced the three distinguished panelists, each of whom has made major contributions to the study of populism:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1780\" data-end=\"2380\">\n<li data-start=\"1780\" data-end=\"2018\">\n<p data-start=\"1782\" data-end=\"2018\"><strong data-start=\"1782\" data-end=\"1798\">Pippa Norris<\/strong> is the Paul F. He expressed mixed feelings about Trump\u2019s attacks on universities but suggested that some government pressure could force necessary reflection about free speech and ideological diversity in academia.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"3307\" data-end=\"3346\">Pippa Norris: A Shock to the System<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"3348\" data-end=\"3480\">Pippa Norris emphasized that Trump\u2019s most significant impact has been to expose vulnerabilities in American democratic institutions:<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"3482\" data-end=\"3631\">\n<p data-start=\"3484\" data-end=\"3631\">&#8220;If there has been a good positive development, it\u2019s been the shock to liberals who often took institutions and the rules of the game for granted.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"3633\" data-end=\"3710\">Norris argued that Trump\u2019s presidency revealed the urgent need for reforms:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"3711\" data-end=\"3876\">\n<li data-start=\"3711\" data-end=\"3742\">\n<p data-start=\"3713\" data-end=\"3742\">Campaign finance regulation<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3743\" data-end=\"3773\">\n<p data-start=\"3745\" data-end=\"3773\">Supreme Court appointments<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3774\" data-end=\"3831\">\n<p data-start=\"3776\" data-end=\"3831\">Electoral integrity reforms like ranked-choice voting<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3832\" data-end=\"3876\">\n<p data-start=\"3834\" data-end=\"3876\">Strengthening congressional independence<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote data-start=\"3878\" data-end=\"3996\">\n<p data-start=\"3880\" data-end=\"3996\">&#8220;Every crisis is an opportunity,&#8221; she said, urging Americans to rethink and fortify democratic norms and structures.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3 data-start=\"3998\" data-end=\"4052\">Jan-Werner M\u00fcller: Populism\u2019s Authoritarian Danger<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"4054\" data-end=\"4174\">Jan-Werner M\u00fcller offered a sharply different perspective, arguing that populism\u2019s inherent danger cannot be overlooked:<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"4176\" data-end=\"4341\">\n<p data-start=\"4178\" data-end=\"4341\">&#8220;Populists claim they\u2014and only they\u2014represent the real people,&#8221; M\u00fcller said. &#8220;That gives them license to treat opponents as enemies, undermining democracy itself.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"4343\" data-end=\"4592\">While he acknowledged that some populist complaints were valid, M\u00fcller stressed that America\u2019s existing political system already allowed space for debates on immigration, inequality, and university reform without resorting to authoritarian populism.<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"4594\" data-end=\"4716\">\n<p data-start=\"4596\" data-end=\"4716\">&#8220;It\u2019s not that populists introduced new issues,&#8221; You have Congress, the courts, federalism\u2014many pressure points to check radicalism.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"5343\" data-end=\"5433\">He also noted that cross-cutting political identities prevent a full partisan realignment.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"5435\" data-end=\"5477\">Pippa Norris: Complacency Is Dangerous<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"5479\" data-end=\"5607\">Norris was less optimistic, warning that Americans\u2019 historical lack of experience with authoritarianism could breed complacency:<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"5609\" data-end=\"5739\">\n<p data-start=\"5611\" data-end=\"5739\">&#8220;Because Americans have never lived through authoritarian rule, they assume democracy will just continue. But that\u2019s dangerous.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"5741\" data-end=\"5828\">She stressed the importance of reinvigorating civic culture and voluntary associations.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"5830\" data-end=\"5886\">Jan-Werner M\u00fcller: The Risk of Institutional Erosion<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"5888\" data-end=\"5985\">M\u00fcller pointed out that damage to democratic institutions\u2014even if temporary\u2014leaves lasting scars:<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"5987\" data-end=\"6096\">\n<p data-start=\"5989\" data-end=\"6096\">&#8220;Even if populists are voted out, it\u2019s very hard to fully restore trust and rebuild what has been damaged.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<hr class=\"\" data-start=\"6098\" data-end=\"6101\" \/>\n<h1 data-start=\"6103\" data-end=\"6162\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1631 size-large lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 1024px;
