  • Human Rights Advocate
  • Researcher
  • Professor
  • Museum Curator

Things to Do Before Planning a Career

In addition to the knowledge from classes, hands-on experience through research and internship can help determine your future profession.

When determining a possible career after graduation, you should intern at companies or organizations that align with your interests. For instance, are you interested in local charity organizations? Try United Way.

Some of our majors have interned within local editorial offices, non-profit organizations, and faith-based organizations. Furman’s Summer Internship Fellowship Program provides a stipend and discounted housing on campus for those interning full-time for 8-12 weeks during the summer months.

If you have some research interest or have plans for graduate school, many opportunities are available to get your feet wet in the field. Investigate the interests of our faculty to see if you could collaborate on a research project.

Additionally, if you are curious about teaching, ask professors about previous classes you have taken offered during the summer. You could be a teaching assistant, which includes duties like holding discussion groups, hosting study sessions, and conducting brief lectures.

And lastly, our Exploration of Vocation & Ministry program provides further guidance for those interested in exploring their faith through specific internships, weekly meetings, and University Worship. EVP participants come from diverse backgrounds and pursue a variety of majors and careers.

Reach out to our Internship Office, a valuable resource for finding and preparing for internships. Contact our chair or administrative assistant for more information about career opportunities.  We are happy to help!
