We aspire to excellence in the classroom. Three of our 10 full-time faculty members have received Furman\u2019s Meritorious Teaching Award, two have received Furman\u2019s Meritorious Advising Award, and one has received the American Psychological Foundation Award for Distinguished Teaching in Psychology. In fact, the American Psychological Association\u2019s Distinguished Teaching of Psychology Award was re-named after our very own, Charles L. Brewer!<\/p>\n
During your first and second year at Furman you will be assigned a faculty advisor who may or may not be in the psychology department.\u00a0 If you are considering majoring in Psychology, we recommend taking General Psychology\u00a0<\/em>as soon as possible, and a 200-level psychology course after that.<\/p>\n When you declare your major to be psychology, you will be assigned an advisor within the Psychology department.\u00a0 Your new major advisor will help you to craft a program of study that meets your personal goals while fulfilling the major requirements.<\/p>\n In addition to helping you with course selection, your Psychology Advisor will help you to explore engaged learning experiences such as conducting research, completing an internship, or study away.\u00a0 Furthermore, your Advisor will encourage you to seek out opportunities to learn more about your vocational interests and potential careers after Furman.<\/p>\n The Psychology Department has a well-attended Professional Development Workshop series each year with sessions exploring Careers in Psychology, Graduate School in Psychology, and more.\u00a0 Both majors and students considering majoring in Psychology are encouraged to attend.\u00a0 The dates for the workshop sessions can be found on our events page<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" We aspire to excellence in the classroom.
