{"id":94,"date":"2019-08-05T21:31:10","date_gmt":"2019-08-05T21:31:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/academics\/music\/?page_id=94"},"modified":"2024-05-20T15:34:42","modified_gmt":"2024-05-20T15:34:42","slug":"summer-jazz-camp","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/academics\/music\/camps-conferences\/summer-jazz-camp\/","title":{"rendered":"Summer Jazz Camp"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 class=\"ms-rteElement-H3\">Sunday &#8211; Thursday<\/h2>\n<h3><strong>June 23-27, 2024<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>A joint program of Furman Music and the non-profit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.greenvillejazzcollective.com\/\"><strong>Greenville Jazz Collective<\/strong><\/a>, the camp is a unique experience designed to encourage High School students\u00a0of all levels to fuel their jazz performance skills<strong>.<\/strong> Current 6th and 7th grade students considered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/academics\/music\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/105\/2020\/01\/JazzCamp_Student_Recommendation_Form.pdf\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1565\">by teacher recommendation<\/a>.\u00a0 Students will take daily classes in jazz theory, improvisation, and jazz history, and perform in a big band and\/or jazz combo. The camp includes evening faculty recitals, social events, improvisation sessions and a final student concert. Students of all instruments can apply. Board or Commute.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Location: <\/strong>Furman University performing arts complex &#8211; Daniel Music Building, McAlister Auditorium, Nan Trammell Herring Music Pavilion.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2 class=\"ms-rteElement-H3\">Typical Day<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>7:00 Breakfast<\/li>\n<li>7:45\u00a0 Warm-up<\/li>\n<li>8:00 \u00a0Camp Meeting<\/li>\n<li>8:30 \u00a0Big Band Rehearsal \/ Rhythm section special topics class<\/li>\n<li>10:00 Jazz History \/ Listening class<\/li>\n<li>11:00 Improvisation Class<\/li>\n<li>12:00 Lunch \/ free time \/ lessons<\/li>\n<li>1:30 \u00a0 Combo rehearsal<\/li>\n<li>3:30 \u00a0 Master classes (separated by instrument)<\/li>\n<li>4:30 \u00a0 Big Band rehearsal \/ Rhythm section special topics class<\/li>\n<li>6:00 \u00a0 Dinner<\/li>\n<li>7:30 &#8211; 8:30pm Evening Recital<\/li>\n<li>8:30pm Jam Session<\/li>\n<li>10:00pm Dorm Meeting on each hall<\/li>\n<li>11:00pm\u00a0 Lights out<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Closing concert:<\/strong> 3pm, Thursday.\u00a0 Free Admission.\u00a0 Public invited.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2 class=\"ms-rteElement-H3\">Clinicians<\/h2>\n<p>The camp director is Dr. Olson, Director of Jazz Studies and Professor of Saxophone at Furman University.\u00a0 All instruction at the camp is provided by members of the Greenville Jazz Collective, a renowned non-profit organization that promotes jazz education and performance in the Upstate.
