The highest academic honor in the field of French and the oldest academic honor society for a modern foreign language in the United States, Pi Delta Phi was founded as a departmental honor society at the University of California at Berkeley in 1906 [\u2026] The purpose of the Society is to recognize outstanding scholarship in the French language and Francophone literatures, to increase the knowledge and appreciation of Americans for the cultural contributions of the French-speaking world, and to stimulate and to encourage French and francophone cultural activities.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"x_wixui-rich-texttext x_ContentPasted1\">\u201d<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<a id=\"LPlnk602960\" title=\"https:\/\/www.pideltaphi.org\/about\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pideltaphi.org\/about\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-loopstyle=\"linkonly\" data-linkindex=\"1\">Source: national website<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"x_font8\"><span class=\"x_ContentPasted3\">Those students interested in joining Furman\u2019s <\/span><span class=\"x_ContentPasted3\">Rho Epsilon chapter\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"x_ContentPasted3\">should contact the faculty moderator, Dr. Marianne Bessy.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Sigma Delta Pi<\/h2>\n<p>The National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society was founded at the University of California, Berkeley in 1919. \u00a0Furman&#8217;s Rho Kappa Chapter, chartered in the spring of 1988, is one of nearly 600 chapters at universities and colleges across the United States. \u00a0Please visit the <a href=\"http:\/\/sigmadeltapi.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">national website<\/a> for more information on the distinctions,\u00a0awards, and scholarships available to students, chapters, and faculty. \u00a0Those students interested in joining the Rho Kappa chapter should contact the faculty advisor,\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:maria.rippon@furman.edu\">Dr. Maria Rippon<\/a>. \u00a0The application below\u00a0details the requirements for membership.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/academics\/modern-languages-literatures\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/95\/2020\/01\/application.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sigma Delta Pi Application [PDF]<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>The Elaine Duffy Childers Fellowship<\/h2>\n<p>The annual fellowship offers substantial financial support for a currently enrolled student of French who plans to return to Furman for the subsequent academic year. The purpose of the fellowship is \u201cto provide a stipend for a student studying French to have a study abroad experience above and beyond that provided by the Furman in Rennes program.\u201d The fellowship funds a summer travel opportunity in a French-speaking country. Normally the student would be enrolled in a summer course at a French university or Alliance fran\u00e7aise, intern, or complete a work experience. Priority consideration is given to French majors.
