I have always felt drawn to teaching, and choosing Educational Studies gave me the opportunity to explore different pathways within the education field.”

Once she graduated, Katie’s journey began with an opportunity to work in Seoul, South Korea; as an English instructor at a POLY school (a private English immersion school), she taught students in K-3. Katie explained that opportunity helped her develop her classroom management and planning skills.

“What I enjoyed most about this position was working with a variety of classes rather than the same group every day,” Katie recalls. “This experience was not only the highlight of my career so far but also deeply meaningful to me, as I was adopted from Seoul. Living and working there gave me the chance to connect with my culture and imagine what life might have been like had I not been adopted.”

This experience in Korea combined with her Educational Studies program have laid the foundation for the next steps along Katie’s path as an educator. Katie is currently teaching as a preschool teacher at Ivybrook Academy and as an aftercare teacher at the Primrose School.

Katie values this new challenge: “At Ivybrook, I work with older two-year-olds, where I guide them in their learning and explorations through play. This is a new area of education for me, and I have enjoyed applying what I know while also expanding my teaching knowledge.”

Next steps for Katie include securing certification and then possibly a graduate program.

Katie Goodwyn (Educational Studies, Furman, class of 2024) has brought to life what “pathways” hopes to accomplish at Furman University.
