I am an Education major at Furman, so this experience was an amazing opportunity for me. Not only was I able to further expand my knowledge on school systems and various pedagogical techniques, but I was also able to build strong relationships with the two professors during this experience—Dr. Hawthorne from the Math Department and Dr. Lipscomb.

While we were in South Carolina we spent a few days visiting local schools in Greenville and learning about the structure of New Zealand’s and Australia’s education systems. We also used this time to create a lens of focus that we wanted to use to examine the pedagogical techniques used abroad, which we presented as a final project at the end of our MayX. When we arrived in Auckland our group hit the ground running. We visited local schools, meeting teachers, students, principals, and other staff members, while also being able to observe lessons and ask questions.

One amazing aspect of this MayX program was the free time we had built into our course schedule, which included a free day for exploration in every city and free evenings! I spent my free time exploring the cities with my friends including restaurant outings, shopping, whale watching, and even hiking in the Blue Mountains of Australia.

Overall, I would say that this May Experience was one of the best educational opportunities I have ever had. Since my trip I have thought of a few ways in which I can incorporate techniques I learned into my future classroom and have thought of ways that I can strive to enhance my teaching methods. I also fell in love with Australia and dream of returning, or even moving there and getting an international teaching license. I am beyond thankful for this experience and for Furman’s Education Department for creating this fantastic opportunity.

Education and Educational Studies majors (and Dr. Lipscomb) at
Bondi Beach, Australia

Brittany Vasquez ’27, Abigail Crane ’28, Calla Fisher ’27, and Emmy Barber ’28 This past May I had the opportunity to attend the MayX program: Exploring Education in South Carolina, New Zealand, and Australia, which allowed us to travel to both New Zealand and Australia over the course of three weeks and study the different […]

[1

post-809","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized
["GET
