Tutorial 8:  Publishing Your Web Page

Setting the Default Location

So far you have been saving your web page to either the hard drive or a floppy diskette.  That means that you are the only one who can view your masterpiece.  It's time to go public and post your hard work to the web for all the world to see.  There are several ways to post pages to the web, but the easiest way is to use the "Publish" button right in Netscape Composer.

STEP 1:

The first step in being able to publish to the web in one simple poosh of the button is to tell Communicator where your files will reside on a web server.  To set the default location, click on "Edit" then "Preferences" (last item at the bottom).
STEP 2:
In the dialogue box that opens up (left), you will see a menu of choices.  Locate "Composer" and then click on the plus sign  to the left of the word "Composer."  This will reveal the submenu of choices under Composer (right).  Click on "Publishing."
STEP 3:

The dialogue box that opens up should look like this:


In the box that says "Enter a FTP or HTTP site address to Publish to," enter the path to your web directory.  For Furman faculty the path is:  ftp://alpha.furman.edu/usr/web/faculty/username.  For Morehouse faculty, the path is: ftp://facstaff.morehouse.edu/export/home/username.  The second box is optional.  If you want to put in the web page URL, you may, but you don't have to.  When you are finished, click "OK."  Now you're ready to "POOSH THE BUTTON."
 

One Step Publishing

Once you have prepared your web page and are ready to post it to the web server, click the icon on the toolbar that says "Publish."  A dialogue box that looks like this will open up:
 
  1. Enter a page title
  2. Enter the filename including .htm
  3. For location, click "use default location" button
  4. Enter your user name
  5. Enter your password
  6. By default, Composer will publish not only your htm file, but all files associated with it (ex: images)
  7. Click OK and watch the magic!
  8. Your files will be sent to your web server and a verification notice will appear on the screen if all goes well (or, a dreaded error message if it doesn't!).
To verify that all is as you think it should be, go out of Composer and into Navigator, type in the URL of your new web page and view the results.
