Religion Department 2003 Travel Study

Attention: New topics are available as of today (10/23); many of the new tiopics are general essays on the religious communities of a partuicular place in history.  If you choose such topic, please talk to other students who are dealing with the same location.  More than one person can treat the same location, focusing on different eras in history.

Below, find a list of sites to be visited. Each student will write an introduction to a specific site, or an introductory essay on a broader topic (see list D). The essays have to be finished before the Thanksgiving break, and will be made available to all students in our own guide-book before we leave on the trip.  Sites listed on a red background have already been assigned, those on a green background are still available.

Additionally, each student is expected to deliver a brief report (10-20 minutes, depending on circumstances) on location during the trip. While irregularities in scheduling travel will at times prevent individual students from delivering their report, all students are expected to be sufficiently prepared to introduce the students to the site when time permits.

Research on your particular site can serve as a basis on which you can write your term paper. The term paper will not exclusively focus on a particular site, but will rather draw together aspects of different sites visited into a coherent thesis about the historical interconnections between different religious traditions, common backgrounds, etc.

Grading:

Your introductory essay, to be published in the guide-book, should fit on one page. The essay and on-site presentation together will count for 10 % of your grade. In cases where on site presentation is not feasible, your essay will count 10 %.

Another 20 % of the grade will be based on your final research paper, between five to seven pages in length.
