Intro to Religion
REL 141 (formerly REL 12) meets the Ultimate Questions (UQ) GER.

Religion is without doubt among the most powerful forces in human experience.  It gives people a sense of hope in the face of death; it is a reason to live when conditions of life suggest that there is none; it creates enemies and fosters war; it brings enemies together and motivates people to risk or even sacrifice their lives for others; it can inspire both the beautiful and the horrific.

An informed perspective on religion has never been more important.  The conversation about "culture wars" demonstrates just how impassioned and significant the discussion can be.  Even those of us who do not consider ourselves religious must appreciate the influence of this uniquely human phenomenon if we are to make the world a better place. Use Helen Lee Turner, a distinguished faculty member, as a resource to develop a more mature understanding of your own religion and that of others.

"What we do in Religion 141 is generally challenging for both the religious and the non-religious student. But most agree that they are better off having asked the questions that the course raises."

Helen Lee Turner

Professor of Religion, currently writing an Introduction to Religion college textbook, and researching Hopi religion as well as the Baptist influence on President Jimmy Carter

"Participating in and Engaged Living class was probably one of the best decisions I have made since coming to Furman.  Dr. Turner was really supportive and allowed for many oppurtunites out of class to get her input.  She facilitated field trips to local places of Christian and Jewish worship and was availible for study sessions in the dorm."
