     Students involved in the program take away a unique set of memories-  memories that reflect an amazing freshman experience.  Listed below are questions to think about when deciding on an Engaged Living program that works for you.

 

So what is Engaged Living?

How many classes are in an Engaged Living track?  Is this track only for one term?

What kind of credit do I get for Engaged Living?  Are the courses electives?

Do I need to worry about AP credit?

How much will this cost me?

If I sign up for this track, will it keep me from taking other classes?

My major and/or sport will take up a lot of time.  Can I still participate in Engaged Living?

 

So what is Engaged Living?

Who?  120 freshmen divided into 6 programs

When?  You choose!  There are year-long and fall term only options available!

Where?  Gambrell Residence Hall

Who participates in Engaged Living?
     A diverse group of students participate in the Engaged Living program.  From actors to athletes, writers to musicians, participants in the Engaged Living program are leaders.

South Carolina NAACP Youth & College Division president
varsity student-athlete
Furman Pauper Players performers
Residential Life Council vice-president
cheerleading captain
Student Activities Board members
Paladin Newspaper journalists

How many classes are in an Engaged Living track?  Is this track only for one semester?

     Each track works differently.  Some are more extensive than others, both in number of courses and length of the track.  Decide what excites you most!

Environmental Community of Students (ECOS)
Two classes- Earth & Environmental Science 112 (formerly 21) and a First-Year Seminar 1126: Sustainabilty of Natural Resources
Semester- Year-long sequence, Fall- EES 112, Spring- FYS

Curses, Cures and Clinics
One class- First-Year Writing Seminar
Semester- Fall only

Intro to Religion
One class- Religion 141 (formerly 12)
Semester- Fall only

Exploration of Vocation 
One class- First-Year Seminar
Semester- Fall only

Psychology of Popular Media
One class- First-Year Seminar
Semester- Fall only

Doing History in the 1950s
One class- First-Year Seminar. There are two different sections available.
Semester- Fall only

What kind of credit do I get for Engaged Living?  Are the courses electives?

            All courses in Engaged Living are university approved courses and each class is a four-credit course.  All Engaged Living classes are not electives.  In fact the majority of them fulfill general education requirements!

EES 112 satisfies the GER for Natural World (NW)
FYS 1126-01 satisfies the FYS requirment

Curses, Cures and Clinics
FYW 1176-01
satisfies the FYW requirment

Intro to Religion
REL 141 meets the GER for Ultimate Questions (UQ)

Exploration of Vocation
FYS 1103-01
satisfies the FYS requirment

Psychology of Popular Media
FYS 1167-01
satisfies the FYS requirment

Doing History in the 1950s
FYW 1106-01
satisfies the FYW requirment - OR-
FYW 1106-02 satisfies the FYW requirment

Do I need to worry about AP credit?

            For most Advanced Placement exams, Furman accepts scores of 4 or 5 in place of course credit.  If you are taking an AP exam in a track of interest, please let us know in advance so you don?t lose credit for your accomplishment!  You can still take a course that you have AP credit for, but you will not be able to keep the four credit hours you earned in high school.

    AP Environmental Science- a score of 4 or 5 earns credit for EES 112

How much will this cost me?

             Engaged Living tracks come at no cost to you! 

 

If I sign up for this track, will it keep me from taking other classes?

            In some cases, participating in an Engaged Living course will not interfere with other classes at all.  However, there are certain courses that do conflict.

NOTE: Lab times may conflict with essential classes for music majors and practices for some atheltic teams.

            One of the most important skills you'll learn as a college student is time management.  Check below for an idea of how much time each course would require.

Lab time: EES 112- TH 2:30- 5:20
WARNING: Fall student athletes should be cognizant of any conflict with afternoon practice.
