Environmental Community of Students (ECOS)
Environmental Science 112 (formerly 21) satisfies  GER for the Natural World (NW).- Fall Semester
First-Year Seminar 1126-01 "Sustainabilty of Natural Resources" satisfies the FYS requirment. - Spring Semester

Would you like to learn while camping the Western Carolina woods? Take a field trip to the Happy Cow Creamery and learn how small and local farms contribute to the growing sustainabilty movement. Furman faculty, staff and students have long been leaders in pushing for an eco-friendly Furman. That's why we created the Environmental Community of Students (ECOS) in conjunction with Engaged Living. If you are interested in how to be a better steward of your natural resources, join the ECOS group and learn about campus sustainability initiatives like bio-diesel fuel, the Lake Restoration Project or the organic garden.

Furman's pioneering eco-programs are team-taught courses for students interested in either majoring in environmental studies or just looking for an exciting way to fulfill their science requirement. You will explore the relationships between humans and the environment and discover the causes and consequences of the world's major environmental problems.

"What could be more important than learning about our home? Students will be able to relate the material to every discipline on campus and their lives because environmental issues are bigger than just the science."

Weston Dripps

Assistant Professor of Earth and Environmental Science, Advisor for Furman's Environmental Action Group
Former Engaged Living Faculty member

"You can learn only so much about the world in a classroom, but for something like Environmental Science you need to experience it firsthand. Going to an organic dairy farm was education for someone like me."
