a closer look.

At Furman, our students know what we mean when we talk about sustainability and environmental awareness. Our campus and our students have long been leaders in pushing for a more eco-friendly Furman. That's why we created the Environmental Community of Students (ECOS) in conjunction with Engaged Living. This program is for incoming freshmen who either are looking to use their environmental knowledge in a tangible and meaningful way or those who are just curious or even skeptical about the national discussion.

All 15 students who participate receive a $1,000 stipend and are involved every week at the forefront of some of Furman's most exciting eco-initiatives.Students must participate in ECOS projects to recieve the stipend.

What will I be doing? You can select an environmental project that suits your interests and skills.  Projects differ greatly: making bio-diesel, helping with our organic garden, or putting on waders to help keep our campus lake clean.  This past year students have gotten to work in the organic garden, run an ongoing film fest, create bio-disel fuel and a number of other fun and interactive projects. Many are being set up again for next year!

What if I don't want to be a science major? That's ok! Many of our ECOS students are not science majors, but are interested in learning more about the environment. For some of them, these will be the only science courses they take at Furman and for others it taps into an interest that they never knew they had.

What if I know nothing about the environment? That's ok, too. This is a great opportunity to either build on your knowledge or literally start from scratch and we are always excited to have a range of student backgrounds.
