faculty, staff and students are invited to attend a Friday morning ceremony
to kick-off the 2003 Furman United Way campaign. President David Shi and Baxter
Wynn, associate pastor of Greenville First Baptist and chairman of United Way
of Greenville County campaign, are scheduled to deliver brief remarks.
The kick-off will be held at McAlister Auditorium. A light breakfast (muffins, pastries, fruit, juice and coffee) will be served in the auditorium lobby. There will be giveaways and prize drawings. You must be present to win. The first program will be held 7:30-8:10 a.m. A second program will begin at 8:15. The event will conclude at 9 a.m.
Last year, Furman raised $46,718 for the United Way of Greenville County. The campaign goal for 2003 will be announced at the kick-off. Michelle Shain, community relations director, is serving as Furman’s campaign coordinator.

Your gift helps people right here in Greenville County:
• 2,840 persons learned to read through participating
in adult literacy programs.
• Over 2 million pounds of excess food throughout Greenville County have
been rescued in the past year alone and provided to soup kitchens, shelters
for abused women and children, emergency food pantries and community child care
programs.
• 17,420 medical visits were provided for working individuals who had
no health insurance or other health care coverage.
• 1,000 children were screened to detect speech, hearing and learning
problems.
• 2,675 senior citizens received in-home support to help them stay safely
in their homes and maintain their independence.
• 453 abused and neglected children received emergency care services from
United Way supported agencies.
• More than 14,000 persons were trained in CPR and First Aid - so that
they are prepared to help a neighbor in crisis.

Additional ways your generosity changes lives:
• 209 families received more than 5,800 hours of
respite care and support to assist them in providing care to a family member
living with Alzheimer’s disease.
• More than 2,200 quality childcare slots were provided by United Way
funded agencies.
• 2,264 individuals received medical equipment and assistance to help
them fight back against cancer.
• 300 “at risk” elementary and middle school students are
being served in after-school “Smart Centers” (located at public
schools) with the goal of preventing school failure and dropouts. Of those 300,
95% passed to the next grade level in the last school year.
• 1,017 persons received employment readiness and job skills training
through agencies funded by the United Way.
• More than 10,000 seniors were provided hot meals, recreational activities
and in-home support.
• 410 people who lost everything in a fire, flood or other disaster received
food, clothing and temporary shelter.
• 1,100 adults and children were helped through sexual trauma programs
last year, receiving 24-hour support, counseling and advocacy services.
