Employment at the University Center

The University Center at Furman employs approximately 20 – 25 dynamic student employees each year. Student positions on the University Center staff include Student Managers, Information Desk Attendants, Gauntlet Game Room Attendants, Operations Assistants, and Audio/Visual Technical Assistants. Each of these positions plays a vital and integral role in the daily operations of the University Center, and all students employed gain valuable leadership, management, customer service, and fiscal management skills.

Student Manager

Student Managers administer the University Center during evening hours and on weekends in the absence of the professional staff. Student Managers perform a wide array of duties including supervising other student employees, setting up rooms according to customer requests, completing event preparation procedures, and overseeing all audio visual needs. University Center Student Managers also secure the building upon closing, open the building for special events, and ensure the safety of customers at all times.

Information Desk Attendant

The duties of the Information Desk Attendant include greeting and assisting customers with inquiries about the University and the University Center, answering and directing phone calls, assisting Student Managers with set-ups as requested, directing visitors, assisting professional staff with administrative tasks, and generally ensuring excellent customer service at all times.

Gauntlet Game Room Attendant

Game Room Attendants oversee the daily operation of the Gauntlet; general responsibilities include greeting and helping customers, checking out game room equipment to students, monitoring the cleanliness of the room, and enforcing game room policies.

Operations Assistants

Operations Assistants are responsible for setting up University Center facilities for a wide range of events and meetings, arranging basic Audio/Visual and other technical equipment, and ensuring that meeting rooms are clean. Setting up rooms includes tables, chairs, stages, podiums, and other equipment.

Audio/Visual Technicians

The duties of the Audio/Visual Technician include setting up, operating, and taking down all audio visual equipment used during large events; building, operating, and taking down 35 mm film for movies; maintaining equipment in workable condition; working large events requiring technical equipment and assistance as requested; organizing and maintaining audio visual storage facilities; and troubleshooting problems for customers.

  1. Verify that you are work-study eligible
  2. Contact the Furman University Student Employment Office at (864)-294-2184, or visit the office located in room 210 of the University Center.
  3. If positions are available, the Student Employment Office will refer you to the Assistant Director for Event Services for further information.
  4. Check "Student News" on Furman's intranet for on-campus jobs posted throughout the academic year.
