A native of Irmo, South Carolina, J. Scott Derrick has worked in higher education for almost 20 years. A 1988 graduate of Furman University with a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics, J. Scott received his Master’s of Education degree in 1990 from the University of South Carolina with a major in Student Personnel Services. He served for 2 years as the Assistant Director of Student Activities at the University of Richmond, then 6 years as the Director of Student Life at the College of Charleston. He also served as a dynamic speaker on the college circuit, presenting the Creative Dating Workshop and the “Hoo-Ray” Orientation program to over 20 colleges and universities across the country. J. Scott came back to Furman in 1999 as the Director of Student Activities and a year later took over as Director of the University Center. He is a consistent presenter of educational sessions with the National Association for Campus Activities (NACA) and the Association of College Unions International (ACUI), as well as local and regional sessions on leadership, management, and motivation! J. Scott also teaches an Ebay 101 course in Furman’s Continuing Education Department, and has taught the course 3 times per year to rave reviews ever since. In his “other life,” J. Scott is a licensed professional auctioneer, and he and his wife, Deborah, live in Travelers Rest with their adopted cat, Millhouse.
