Other Details The Furman University Bookstore will be open throughout both summer sessions. Regular hours are weekdays 9:00AM to 5:00PM and Saturdays 11:00AM to 3:00PM. COMPUTING AND INFORMATION SERVICES The Computing and Information Services Help Desk located on the lower level of the James B. Duke Library provides computing assistance to the campus community throughout the summer. All students are encouraged to obtain Furman network and e-mail accounts. Check out computing.furman.edu/newstudent.php if you don’t yet have an account or visit computing.furman.edu/helpdesk.php to find out more about Help Desk operations and hours. DINING The Paladen Food Court on the lower level of the University Center will be operating until Friday, August 1: Mondays through Thursdays 10:30AM to 3:00PM and Fridays 10:30AM to 1:30PM. The Dining Hall will also be available to summer session students on a cash basis. Hours will be limited (breakfast: 7:00 to 8:30AM, lunch: 11:30AM to 1:30PM, dinner: 4:45 to 6:15PM) and days of service will be determined as needed to serve camps and conferences on campus. Find out more at www.campusdish.com/en-US/CSSE/Furman. FINANCIAL AID Student loans are typically the financial assistance that can be obtained for attending summer sessions here at Furman. Much of the aid available requires students to be enrolled on at least a half-time basis (6 semester hours in the first session or across both sessions). Consult the Financial Aid web site at www.furman.edu/finaid/summeraid.htm for more specifics. HOUSING On-campus housing is available for interested students. A private bedroom in the North Village apartment complex costs $166 per week. Applications must be submitted to University Housing no later than Friday, May 9 to assure your spot.

Find out more about how to obtain an ID at www.furman.edu/busaffairs/IDCards.htm or visit the Student Business Center. INTERNSHIPS, INDEPENDENT STUDY, RESEARCH Internships, Independent Study, and Research opportunities offered on a “for-credit” basis are available in many academic departments each summer. Consult with the department of interest to determine your eligibility for this type of instruction. You may register this type of instruction (typically courses numbered 80 through 89) by securing a request through the summer session home page. Finalize the details with the appropriate academic department and supervising faculty member, and return the completed request to Academic Records for processing no later than the final day of the drop-add period for the second session. Duke Library will be open Mondays through Thursdays from 8:00AM to 10:00PM, Fridays 8:00AM to 5:00PM, and Saturdays and Sundays from 1:00 to 5:00PM throughout the summer. The Library will be closed to observe Independence Day on Friday, July 4. Find out more about hours of operation and services available in the Library at library.furman.edu. OTHER ITEMS TO CONSIDER Course Load Students may enroll for up to 8 semester hours (2 four hour courses) during the first session with most courses holding meetings every weekday for six weeks. Enrollment is limited to 4 semester hours (1 course typically) during the second session because of the very intense nature and short duration of the four week experience. Pass-Fail You may elect a pass-fail grading option for selected courses that you have already registered, consistent with the pass-fail policy as stated in the University Catalog.. Stop at Academic Records to learn more or complete a request. The final day for declaring courses pass/fail is the midpoint of each session. PAC (Physical Activities Center) The Herman W. Lay Physical Activities Center is open regular hours during both summer sessions. A valid student ID is required to use the facilities. Consult furmanfitness.com to find out more about what is happening at the PAC. PARKING Ample parking is available near classroom buildings and all over campus. Obtain a parking permit through the Student Business Center and comply with university traffic and parking regulations to ensure you don't get ticketed! TRAVEL STUDY OPPORTUNITIES Charleston Study Program Students study and live for eight weeks in the historic seaport of Charleston, SC. Participants will complete two courses or one course and an internship designed for the student’s major field of study. Courses offered: ECN-95 Economy & Enterprise in Charleston, HST-95 Lowcountry History, internship experiences Instructors: S O’Neill & C L Tollison (History), K D Peterson & J J Yankow (Economics) Applications for this program must be submitted no later than February 6, 2008. Political Science Internship Program in Washington, DC Students work in a Washington institution, conduct field work and study politics. Internship sites include Congressional offices, the White House, government agencies, non-profit groups, law firms and press organizations.
