Reston Hartsell Furman University

Class of 2014

Without the Engaged Living Program, I would not have had the enriched Furman experience that I did and would not be the man I am today.

My freshman year I was fortunate to have the opportunity to be in the Engaged Living (EL) Program. Engaged Living gave me a community where I could think critically, live with diverse students, and grow spiritually. The impact that Engaged Living had on me was monumental in my transition to college life. The students I lived amongst and went to class with became close friends, and in some cases, extended members of my family. The relationships you build in the Engaged Living community are what I found to be the most rewarding part of the program. When you live, learn, and laugh with others who are going through the same thing you are, you develop a support system that will get you through difficult times ahead.

The classes are just about the same size as the other first year seminars. However, the big difference was the professors get to know you on a deeper level than typical classes. Reflecting back on the entirety of my Furman experience, I have come to realize that Furman offers you an intimate experience where you come to know your peers and professors in ways you wouldn’t normally at larger universities. The Engaged Living Program is a testament to the overall experience you receive at Furman. Without the Engaged Living Program, I would not have had the enriched Furman experience that I did and would not be the man I am today.
