What's included on the university calendar?

The academic calendar displays start and end dates for each term and university holidays and breaks when classes are not held. Billing & Financial Aid, Housing & Dining and Registration & Grading show dates critical to each of these operations.

Important Dates provides information about campus-wide happenings, such as admission events, Family and Homecoming weekends, Orientation sessions and Commencement ceremonies, while Religious Observances include the dates of significant holidays from the five largest global faith traditions. Consult the university’s religious observance policy for more information about how these dates should be incorporated in your planning.

Continuing Education and Graduate Studies calendar enteries display dates specific to these programs and Staff Holidays show dates where most Furman staff are not expected to report to work.

Religious Observance Policy

Furman University supports faculty, students and staff in observing religious holidays. At the same time, in the complex process of creating the academic calendar, religious holy days are but one of many considerations. Accordingly, Furman will avoid placing important university events, such as Opening Convocation, Furman Engaged and Commencement ceremonies on religious holidays.

Furthermore, the university strongly encourages departments to avoid scheduling required events on religious holy days. Faculty are encouraged to give consideration to their students religious observances, so any and all students will not be disadvantaged as a result of religious practice. Ultimately however, it is the student’s responsibility to communicate at the beginning of the term the needs of his or her religious practices and to work with faculty in finding an appropriate means to facilitate meeting the demands of each course. The Office of the Chaplain will provide a multi-faith calendar of religious holidays.
