Special Services Offered by the USPS

NOTE:  Since our Contract Unit status has been changed by the postal service, we cannot offer Registered, Insured and USPS Express services.   However, you can purchase these services at a regular post office. You can find your local post office here.

Certified Mail – Provides proof of delivery of mail.  The sender receives a receipt at the time of mailing, and the United States Postal Service maintains a record of delivery.  The addressee signs for the item when it is delivered.  No record is kept at the Post Office from which Certified Mail items are sent, so hold on to your receipt.  No special handling is given to Certified Mail during transit.

This service is not available for international mail. Certified Mail service is available only on domestic First Class Mail.  No insurance coverage is provided.  A numbered label and completed receipt must be affixed to the mail piece.  Mail Services can provide these for you.

For an additional fee, a return receipt is available which provides you with proof of delivery.

Registered Mail – Registered mail provides security for valuable and important mail and evidence of mailing and delivery. Indemnity in case of loss or damage may be purchased with this service. This mail is the most secure service the USPS offers.  This service will delay delivery, so plan ahead.

Insurance is provided for articles with a value of at least $.01 up to a maximum insured value of $25,000.  Insurance is included in the fee.  Non-negotiable instruments (registered bonds, checks, drafts, etc.) have no replacement value.

Insured Mail – Insured Mail service provides up to $5,000 indemnity for loss, rifling, or damaged articles.  Fees are based on article value.

Express Mail – Due to the timing of our mail pick up by an outside courier service, we cannot guarantee next day delivery of Express Mail, which defeats the purpose of buying this service.  We recommend you use one of the post offices located within a few miles of the campus for Express Mail service.  Service from these locations is guaranteed next day.
