Overview of the alert system

Campus safety is always Furman's primary concern under any circumstance. The university has for years had a Crisis Management and Emergency Response Team that meets regularly. Furman's University Police staff are trained and equipped to protect the Furman community. The university has security measures in place and is vigilant in its efforts to be prepared for the unexpected. For example, Furman has contingency plans that allow for the continuing care of students over several days in the event of disrupted service. An emergency communication system is also available if electrical service is interrupted. The university's Health Center is part of the Emergency Response Team.

In the event of a national or campus emergency, the Furman community will be notified through a variety of communication mechanisms, including, personal cell telephones, the web and e-mail.  So that you will receive emergency notifications through your cell telephone, be sure to check your account in MyFurman to make sure your contact information is current. Updated contact information is downloaded into the notification software every Monday.  Information for emergency notification should be provided to the University Police office, which is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days week, at 294-2111.  Several University Police officials have been trained to initiate the emergency notification system. The system is tested internally monthly and campuswide twice a year, in the first month of the Fall Semester and Spring semester.

The Furman homepage and intranet will broadcast an alert and provide information outlining the university's response. There will also be messages available on a 24-hour hotline, 864-294-3766.  The Emergency Response team is constantly evaluating new technologies for communication as they emerge.

Since family anxieties will be a priority during emergencies, students should talk with family members about various ways of getting in touch with one another should normal communication routes be disrupted.

It is important for Furman faculty, staff and students to be aware of their surroundings and report any unusual activities on campus. Students should keep residence halls and their apartments secure.

Use of the Furman web site and email system

Alerts on incidents on campus are provided to the campus community through email bulletin boards, University Police's web page and The Paladin newspaper.
