There are more than 4,000 smoke detectors on Furman's campus.
All dormitories and other student housing on campus have smoke detectors installed throughout hallways and dorm rooms. These detectors will always immediately report any fire alarm directly to Furman Police.
Furman's fire alarm system relies on a closed-loop fiber optic network which allows a signal transmission time to be one or two seconds.
Most nuisance alarms(false alarms) are caused by smoke from cooking. Many other alarms are caused by other occupant activities such as drying hair.
All dormitory smoke detectors are continously in communication with the fire alarm network, and when removed immediately send a signal to the Police.
