Policy Events

The Riley Institute is committed to educating the public on policy matters of broad concern. One of the primary ways in which we do this is through policy series addressing a variety of topics, including education, health care, the environment and smart growth. You can click on the links at right to learn more about our past policy series.

Policy Series

An important focus of the Riley Institute is the creation of on-going programs that address pertinent policy and societal issues. Two of the most important Riley Institute series center on the ongoing relationship between the rapidly changing landscape of urban politics and policy, and women and politics.

The Urban Politics and Policy Series

Since the early 1960s, significant economic and demographic changes have had a remarkable impact on the political and spatial contexts of American cities, towns and suburban areas. In many locations across America, and especially in the "sunbelt," sprawling urban and suburban complexes occupying hundreds of miles of the American landscape have taken the place of small towns and farming areas. Many believe that the quality of life in these mega-cities and the suburbs that surround them have diminished and that civic participation and responsibility have suffered as a result. The Riley Institute's Urban Politics and Policy Series is designed to investigate the politics of urban America and to explore policies that enhance the lives of individuals and neighborhoods that make up the greater community. Speakers in the series have included Vince Graham, the nationally acclaimed developer of "smart growth," urban traditional communities in the low country of South Carolina; Dan Burden, the foremost authority on "walkable cities," and Joe Riley, the architect of the rebirth of Charleston, South Carolina.

Women and Politics Series

Developed to provide a forum to explore the role women play in the American and international political arenas and to encourage women to take an active, informed role in the political world, the Riley Institute's Women and Politics Series hosts a variety of speakers each year. Among the speakers in the series have been former First Lady and current U.S. Senator from New York, Hillary Rodham Clinton; former Canadian Prime Minister, Kim Campbell; former mayor of Salt Lake City and former president of the National Conference of Mayors, Deedee Corradini; member of the European Parliament and chair of the European Green Party, Monica Frassoni; and former U.S. Secretary of State, Madeleine K. Albright.

Members of the public are encouraged to join us for stimulating discussions featuring leading experts.
