"Smart Growth"
October 20, 2003
In communities
across the nation, there is a growing concern that current development
patterns --dominated by what some call "sprawl" -- are
no longer in the long term interest of our cities, existing suburbs,
small towns, rural communities, or wilderness areas. Though supportive
of growth, communities are questioning the economic costs of abandoning
infrastructure in the city, only to rebuild it further out.
Vince Graham,
developer of Newpoint, Broad Street, and I'On has more awards for
ecologically sound, "smart growth" development than anyone
in the country. In explosive growth areas of the new south, where
the political arenas are highly charged and financial stakes are
high, achieving "smart growth" takes place in a "politicized"
environment.
At 7:30 PM,
Monday, October 20th in the Watkins Room, Vince spoke about smart
growth and the Politics of Smart Growth in South Carolina. His visual
and oral presentation was both significant and interesting and an
important one for anyone interested in the dynamics of rapid growth
and the conflicts that result.
About Vince
Graham
Vince Graham
utilizes his understanding of the relationship between the public
and private realms to create places with social and economic value.
After graduating
in 1986 with a degree in Economics from the University of Virginia,
Vince returned to his hometown of Atlanta, Georgia, to work in the
real estate finance and brokerage fields. He served as Project Coordinator
during the start up phases of Spring Island, an environmentally
sensitive 3000-acre project between Beaufort and Hilton Head Island.
He has participated in renovation and in-fill projects in the historic
districts of Beaufort and Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina. In 1992
he founded Newpoint, and since that time has lead the development
of three other traditional neighborhoods: The Village at Port Royal,
Broad Street, and I'On.
His neighborhoods
have received critical acclaim in The Wall Street Journal, Southern
Living, Traditional Home, Coastal Living, Architecture, and Builder
magazines, on CNN and the BBC. Additionally, these neighborhoods
have been the recipient of numerous awards from the American Institute
of Architects, the National Association of Home Builders, and the
South Carolina Department of Natural Resources.
Vince is on
the Board of Advisors for the Preservation Institute of Nantucket
and Upstate Forever, a conservation organization based in Greenville,
SC. He also serves on the faculty of the South Carolina Mayors Design
Institute. He is frequently asked to speak at Smart Growth and Architecture
symposiums around the United States and in Europe.
