Wednesday, March 4, 2009, 8 p.m.
Watkins Room, University Center

Leon R. Kass, M.D., Ph.D., is the Addie Clark Harding Professor in the Committee on Social Thought and the College at the University of Chicago and Hertog Fellow in Social Thought at the American Enterprise Institute. He was chairman of the President's Council on Bioethics from 2002 to 2005. He has written widely on the moral questions raised by modern science, including his 1984 book Toward a More Natural Science: Biology and Human Affairs and in (2002), Life, Liberty, and the Defense of Dignity. His latest book, The Beginning of Wisdom, is a commentary on the Book of Genesis.

The Tocqueville Program at Furman University brings prominent scholars and public intellectuals to campus with the aim of encouraging serious and open engagement with moral questions at the heart of political life. The program seeks to contribute to the development of thoughtful citizens by exploring the norms, truths, and values that inform our understanding of politics.

The program takes it name from Alexis de Tocqueville, perhaps the greatest student of modern democracy, who understood both the difficulty and the necessity of reminding citizens of a decent and prosperous regime about questions of truth, nobility and eternity. These questions are not always comfortable to discuss and are never easily resolved; but, as Tocqueville understood, they are questions which cannot be ignored by human beings who seek to live lives of freedom and dignity.
