Nationally known expert on Southern Politics, Merle Black, of Emory University was at Furman during "debate week" as a Riley Institute Fellow in Residence.

Dr. Black did his undergraduate work at Harvard College and his Ph.D at the University of Chicago. His works on the Democratic Party in the South and the Rise of Republican Party in the south are not only the main texts in the field, but the definitive works on southern politics during the last two decades.
