Anthony H. Barash
Public Address: "Law, Democracy, and the Courts in Central Asia"

Tony Barash, after years as Senior Vice President, Corporate Affairs and General Counsel of Bowater Incorporated, became the American Bar Association/Central European and Eurasian Law Initiative (ABA/CEELI) Officer in Uzbekistan in May 2003. He led ABA/CEELI's judicial reform project in Uzbekistan. For a year and a half he worked to develop the Uzbeki legal and judicial systems in addition to those of other Central Asian States. The program offered training, workshops and seminars attended by over 90% of Uzbekistan's 870 active judges, and published a resource book of ethics materials which has been distributed to most of the country's judges.

Barash has served on the Board of Trustees of Pitzer College, Claremont, California; of the Peace Center for the Performing Arts, Greenville, South Carolina; of the Urban League of the Upstate, Greenville, South Carolina; and the University of Chicago Law School, Chicago, Illinois. He received his A.B., cum laude, from Harvard College and his Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of Chicago Law School.
