STAFF
Don Gordon
has
been the Director of the Riley Institute since its inception in
1999. Dr. Gordon is a Professor of Political Science at Furman where
he specializes in African and Middle Eastern Politics. He received
his M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Florida.
John Simpkins
is an Assistant Professor of Law at the College of Charleston School
of Law. He did his undergraduate work at Harvard College and has
law degrees from Duke University.
Carol
Asalon, who joined the Riley Team in 2003, is the institutes
Business Manager. Carol is a 2004 Furman University graduate with
a degree in accounting. She is responsible for handling the institute's
finances, overseeing marketing materials, and also serves as the
webmaster for the Riley Institute site.
Brooke
Culclasure is a Project Director with the Riley Institute.
She completed her undergraduate work at the University of Richmond
and earned her M.A. from the University of Virginia, M.A. from the
University of South Carolina, and Ph.D. from the University of Virginia.
Brooke coordinates the Emerging Public Leaders program and serves
as project director for a state-wide research project on public
education.
Calder
Ehrmann joined the Riley Institute in 2005 as a Senior
Associate and works closely with the Riley Diversity Leaders Initiative.
After 30 years with Michelin North America, Inc., he retired as
the Vice President of Diversity, during which time he was responsible
for launching Michelin's Corporate Diversity function.
Jill
Fuson, a graduate of Furman University, has taught in public
high schools in Florida and South Carolina. In 2003, she founded
Carolina Family Adventures, which she owned and operated until 2008.
As the Events Coordinator, she is responsible for overseeing and
coordinating a substantial portion of the events sponsored by the
Institute.
Alexis
Sprogis, who joined the Riley Team in 2008, serves as the
institute's Administrative Assistant. Having graduated from
Winthrop University in 2006 with a B.A. in history, Alexis provides
administrative support for the many Riley Institute events and programs;
she also oversees the production and distribution of the annual
newsletter.
Cathy
Stevens is
the Associate Director with the Riley Institute. She is a 2001 Furman
graduate and earned her M.Ed from Clemson University. Cathy oversees
the planning and execution of the events and programs of the Riley
Institute at Furman. Additionally, she is helping coordinate a state-wide
research project on public education.
Benny
Walker is a Senior Associate with the Riley Institute.
He is a 1971 Furman graduate and earned his MBA from the Clemson/Furman
program in 1975. Formerly a Vice President at Furman, Benny is responsible
for strategic planning and diversity leadership program development.
Courtenay
Williams joined the Riley Institute in 2008 as Project
Coordinator for the Center for Education Policy and Leadership.
She is a 1989 Furman graduate, and earned her M.A. in School Leadership
and Administration at Furman in 2003. She is responsible for coordinating
the Institute’s state-wide research project on public education.
