CELEBRATING 5 YEARS OF DONALD & SUE RABER'S GENEROSITY

The Riley Institute and the Department of Political Science appreciate the support of Don and Sue Raber, long time friends of the institute and the department. Their generous gift, in excess of $100,000, has allowed the Riley Institute and the Department of Political Science to focus on student education through engaged learning, internships, travel study, and research with the goal of enhancing the Furman student experience.

Many Political Science students have benefited from the Raber's generosity. The Don and Sue Raber Scholar Fund has allowed students, among other things, to continue research on a Political Science Honors Essay, participate in the Canadian Parliamentarian Internship program, attend Political Science conferences, and participate in internships that would otherwise have been impossible. For a complete list of students who have received support from the Raber's and to learn more about their experiences, see below.

Don Raber is President and CEO of Aldebaran Financial, Inc, Kingsport, Tennessee. A graduate of Hofstra & Marshall Universities, Mr. Raber is a member of the Furman Advisory Council. The Raber's son, Don Raber II, is a graduate of Furman's Department of Political Science and earned his Masters & Ph.D. from Harvard University. He has taught at Furman and is a tenured faculty member at Presbyterian College. Their son Peter received his undergraduate degree from Emory & Henry College and his MBA from East Tennessee State University.

  • Ben Able participated in an internship in Washington, D.C. during the summer of 2008. He is working with the Children's Defense Fund.
  • Dana Adams was able to continue the research she began on the news media and social perspective with her Political Science Honors essay for which she won second place in 2004. The essay title was: “ Effects of News, Media and Sensationalism on Information Recall, quantitative measure of Bennett’s social perspective hypothesis.” Dana will be an instructor with the Department of Political Science during the academic year 2008-09. She is currently a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Minnesota.
  • Desirae Clodfelter attended a conference on "Initiatives of Change International" held in Caux, Switzerland in July 2008. For more information on this conference, click here.
  • Ricky Harris completed an internship with the Victim Assistance Division of the Solicitor's Office in Greenville, SC during the summer of 2008. He collected and completed victim impact statements that were used by the assistant solicitor and victim advocates in court.
  • Cindy Youssef served as an intern for the "Voices of the Future for APEC" program in Santiago, Chile in November 2004.

Additionally, the Raber fund made possible the following Furman Political Science majors to do research for and become a delegate to the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC):

  • Amer Ahmad
  • Dan Ennis
  • Monica Handa
  • Mike Overby
  • Chris Schoen

Doing research associated with the APEC Conference and attending as a student delegate is prestigious. Furman students are the only American college students permitted to attend the APEC Conferences. Held in Mexico, Vietnam, Chile, South Korea, Thailand, and this coming year, in Lima, Peru, the APEC Conference gives Furman students the chance to meet Presidents, Prime Minister's, and highly placed government officials from the 22 member states and watch the development of public policies and international agreements.
