Legislative Award Dinner

South Carolina Senator Hugh K. Leatherman, who represents Darlington and Florence counties in District 31, was recently named the winner of the third annual David Wilkins Award for Excellence in Legislative Leadership. The award, sponsored by the Riley Institute at Furman, was presented to Leatherman at the annual Wilkins Legislative Award Dinner in Columbia, S.C. on Monday, January 7, 2008. Former Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney was the keynote speaker for the event.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

In honor of the occasion, over 600 legislators, community members, business leaders, and citizens attended the award dinner, including nearly 100 members of the South Carolina House and Senate. Past winners of this award, Senator John Drummond and Speaker of the South Carolina House of Representatives Bobby Harrell, were also present.

The Award Dinner began with a reception at 6 p.m. at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center. David Wilkins, the former Speaker of the South Carolina House of Representatives and current U.S. Ambassador to Canada helped host the event along with former U.S. Secretary of Education and S.C.
