The Furman Triathlon Club

Have you ever been interested in tying a multi-sport? Have you ever watched the Ironman on TV and wondered? Could I do something like that?? Well if so come and check out the Furman Triathlon Club. While some of our member get into the major Ironman events, our sponsor Dr. Scott Murr has complete several Hawaii Ironman races, most of our members participate in shorter Sprint or Olympic distance triathlons. These shorter events can be completed by nearly anyone with a base level of physical fitness that is capable of doing all three events. So if you can swim, bike, and run, no matter how fast, you can complete a triathlon.

Our club travels to several triathlons during the spring such as the Clemson Triathlon and even the Collegiate National Championships. Our club has several bikes and wet suits that can be used by members in any of the events they participate in. As a member, most of your entry free, some cool triathlon garb, and even travel expenses are generally covered in full under our budget.

Our club activities usually concentrate in the Spring, the main season for triathlons, but there will be opportunities to meet with club members throughout the year, do group workouts, and plan upcoming events. If the Furman Triathlon Club sounds like something that might interest you please feel free to contact Matt Stutz, Daniel Roberts, Kyle Bianco, or Scott Murr. We hope to see you the Spring. The Furman Triathlon Club is an official and registered club with USAT; the National Governing body of the sport of Triathlon. The Furman Tri Club us also a member of the Southeast Collegiate Triathlon Conference.

Spring 2009 Race Report

The Furman Triathlon Club focused on the Langley Pond Sprint and International Triathlons this year; held on Saturday 24, April.  The Furman triathletes found Langley Pond to be a triathlon dream all within a few minutes from Historic Downtown Aiken, SC.

The Sprint Triathlon featured a 750 meter Swim, a rolling 20 km Bike, followed by a 5 km Run.  Of the 127 finishers, six were Furman Triathlon Club members.  Daniel Roberts, a sophomore psychology major from Moncks Corner, SC., finished 20th overall and 5th in the Open Division.  Had Roberts entered the Age Group division, he would have won the 20-24 age group (this was Daniel Robert?s 2nd triathlon).  Right behind Roberts was Josh Green (FU class of ?05).  Green was a member of the Furman Triathlon Club while at Furman and continues to race and support the FU Tri Club.  Green was 21st overall and won the 25-29 age group.

Julie Wills, a senior from Agawam, Massachusetts majoring in Spanish and Political Science, was the 14th female finisher and won first place in the 20-24 age group.  Christina Murphy, a senior from Lexington, SC majoring in Health and Exercise Science, finished behind Wills to take 2nd in the 20-24 age group.  Wills was competing in her 2nd triathlon while the Langley Pond Spring Triathlon was Murphy?s first triathlon.

Annie Powell, also a senior in H.E.S. and from Middlebury, Vermont was 17th overall and took home the first place award in the Female Novice division.  Emily Robinson, a senior from Greensboro, North Carolina and a Spanish and History double-major, took home the third place award in the Female Novice division.

All six members of the Furman Triathlon Club competing in the Langley Pond Sprint Triathlon received an award at the Race Awards Ceremony.

There were 8 members of the Furman Triathlon Club competing in the Langley Pond International Triathlon; a 1500 meter Swim, 24 mile Bike, 10 km Run event.  There was a total of 194 finishers in the longest distance triathlon.

While he doesn?t race open, when Phillip Martin races, the results are impressive.  Martin, a senior from Oakwood, GA and Asian Studies major, finished 14th overall out of 145 male finishers.  Martin?s time was fast enough to capture 2nd place in the 20-24 age group.  Matt Stutz, a junior from Westerville, OH majoring in Biology, finished 23rd overall.  Stutz, who ran a 3:04 marathon 4 weeks ago and won his age group at the Powerman Alabama duathlon (run / bike / run) just last weekend, captured 3rd place in the 20-24 age group.  Patrick Berg, a sophomore from Albany, GA majoring in Psychology, brought home the 2nd place award in the Male Novice division.

Also representing the Furman Triathlon Club was Rose Wilson, a Furman Fitness Center member was the 6th fastest female finisher and was the 3rd Female Master (over 40).  Wilson will be competing in the Ironman Triathlon World Championship in Kona, Hawai?i in October.  Dr. Jim Mac Millan, a physician in Travelers Rest and a Furman Fitness Center member was 3rd in the 45-49 age group.  Regina Fowler, a nurse in the Furman Infirmary, and her husband Forrest also competed in the Langley Pond International Triathlon.  After a hiatus from a broken elbow suffered while training for an Ironman triathlon last year, it was good to see Regina Fowler back racing.  Regina was the 24th fastest female and Forrest was the 26th fastest male finisher.  Forrest Fowler won the first place award in the 50-54 age group.  Scott Murr, advisor to the Furman Triathlon Club and Director of the Furman Fitness Center, won first place in the 45-49 age group.
