Practice Schedule:
The Furman Fencing Club meets every Friday from 5:00 to 7:00 in the PAC Dance Studio (turn right after going through the front doors and take the first staircase on your left?the dance studio is through the door to your right at the top of the stairs). New fencers are welcome!
Foothills Fencing Club:
Many of Furman Fencing Club's members also practice fencing Tuesday and Thursday evenings at the Foothills Fencing Club's free fencing sessions. This is a great way to get better! If you're interested in coming along, post on the fencing club forum and ask for a ride.

Club Membership:
The Club is open to any Furman student. To maintain membership in the Club, a member must attend at least 50% of practices per term. Please ask the Club President for a copy of the Furman Fencing Club 2008-09 Operating Principles.
Equipment:
Equipment is provided free of charge and may be issued to a participating member for the entire period that he/she fences with the Club.
If, however, equipment that has been checked out is returned dirty, a substantial cleaning fee will charged.
Competitions:
Each Club member is encouraged to compete in at least 2 tournaments per year. Refer to the website
askfred.com to find a list of events being held. Every Club member who competes in official tournaments
must be a current member of the USFA. The club will pay the membership cost for the top 10 Club members.
Expenses:
The Club will reimburse members for tournament registration fees if a signed receipt from the tournament registrar is presented: No receipt - no reimbursement!
The Club will reimburse travel expenses at the rate of 18 cents per mile with documentation of tournament registration.
Acknowledgement and Release Form:
Furman University requires that all participating members of the Furman Fencing Club sign an Acknowledgement and Release Form. Get the form from the Club President.
Awards:
All participating Club members are expected to attend the Recreational Sports Banquet held at the end of each academic school year and provide input in the designation of Fencing Club award recipients.
Member Participation and Rankings in Fencing Competitions:
Nick Jones fenced in the North Georgia Fencing Competition in Suwanee the weekend of 9/12 and 9/13 and finished 3rd in the E and Under foil event.

FURMAN FENCING CLUB
Operating Principles
The purpose of the Furman Fencing Club is to provide Furman students with an opportunity to participate and compete in the sport of fencing. Operating principles of the Furman Fencing Club follow:
a. The Furman Fencing Club operates as a recreational sport under the supervision of Dr. Owen McFadden, Director of Recreational Sports, and is answerable to him. He is responsible for overseeing all operations of the Furman Fencing Club, but of more specific interest to Club members, he shall:
1. Receive and review the proposed budget and allot funds; approve purchases and facilitate reimbursement of expenditures; maintain a balance sheet for the Club; establish policy; provide and collect release forms; and, supply awards to be presented at the All Sports Banquet, which he organizes.
b. Faculty/Coach Sponsor: The club operates with a faculty sponsor. Dr. Yockey, HES Professor, USFA Foil Level I Coach and Level III Armorer, voluntarily and without remuneration serves as faculty sponsor to the Club. The faculty sponsor shall:
1. Provide Club continuity from year to year; ensure that the budget request for the approaching year is submitted; oversee expenditures, purchases and reimbursements; collect USFA membership forms and travel forms; assist in purchasing, cataloging, dispersing, inventorying, storing and maintaining equipment from year to year; provide instruction and coaching; assist in coordinating tournaments and intercollegiate events; encourage and facilitate participation in local, regional and national competitions; assist with the election of officers; assist with the selection of the USFA Coaches College participant and award recipients; and negotiate contracts with coaches.
c. Membership
1. The Club is open to any Furman student.
2. A Furman Fencing Club member may invite a person who is not a Furman
student to participate in the Club; however, the Club member issuing the
invitation must assume all responsibility for the invited person , including
provision for equipment, instruction and supervision; and, must be in
attendance at practice for the invited person to participate.
i. This policy went in effect in the fall of 2006.
ii. Any person who is not a Furman student and has regularly fenced with the
club prior to the fall of 2006 may continue to do so without being subject
to this policy change.
d. Club Officers: The election of Club officers shall occur at the end of the spring term. Their duties shall be as follows:
1. President ? Coordinates the activities of the club; reserves practice space;
provides for clinics, practices, tournaments and intercollegiate activities;
prepares, in consultation with club members and the faculty sponsor, a
budget for the following year and updates the operating Principles for the year;
assists in the selection of the USFA Coaches College participant and award
recipients; assists in ordering new equipment, communicates with the Executive
Secretary of the SC Division of USFA to schedule and host a USFA sanctioned
tournament; directs the work of the other officers; and assumes leadership at
practices when the Coach is not presiding;
2 Treasurer ? Receives all requests for reimbursement of expenses and ensures that
the paperwork and receipts are attached before sending them to the Office of
Recreational Sports; receives requests for the purchase of equipment and routes
requests to the President and the faculty sponsor; keeps an up-to-date balance
of the amount of money left in the budget; distributes and Acknowledgement
and Release forms and sees that the forms are completed and sent to the Office
of Recreational Sports; Sees that all members who plan to fence competitively fill
out a USFA membership form and forwards the forms to the Office of
Recreational Sports for payment.
3. Armorer/Equipment Manager (s). At the discretion of the President, one or more managers can be designated.
Responsibilities follow:
i. Provides periodic clinics on the care and treatment of equipment and wearable items and in the repair of electric equipment.
ii. Maintains an inventory of equipment and of parts for repairing of foil, epee and saber equipment
iii. Ensures that all equipment, especially electric scoring equipment, is properly treated and maintained.
iv. Assists the faculty sponsor in marking all Furman Fencing Club equipment
v. Assists the faculty sponsor in issuing equipment and assists in the maintenance and storage of the
equipment.
v. Assists the faculty sponsor in documenting equipment issued to club members
vi. Collects equipment after a member ends affiliation with the Club and sees that its return has been
documented.
vii. Invoices a Club member the current replacement cost of equipment that becomes damaged (beyond

normal use) or lost while issued to the Club member.
viii. Invoices a Club member for the cost of cleaning equipment and wearable items that were turned in dirty.
4. PR/Web master - promotes activities and clinics of the club and upcoming tournaments; updates the
Fencing Bulletin Board in the PAC; maintains a web site through the Office of Recreational Sports that
includes names and phone numbers of officers, the coach and sponsor, the practice schedule and location of
practices, Club activities, Current Operating Principles, forms, upcoming tournaments, member accomplishments,
pictures, and events sponsored by the Club; reserves tables for and coordinates, in consultation with the President,
the Club?s presence at activities fairs; and coordinates other activities that promote fencing in area.
e. Club Member Responsibilities and USFA Membership
1. Each Club member shall regularly and actively participate in Club practices and activities.
i. Each member is expected to be present at a minimum of 50% of all scheduled practices per term with
an exception granted those on study away programs or experiencing unusual personal problems.
2. Failure to attend at least 50% of practices per term shall result in immediate forfeiture of all FFC equipment issued to the individual.
3. Each experienced Club member is expected to represent Furman University in at least two USFA sanctioned
tournaments per year. One who does so shall earn the FFC patch that can be attached to the sleeve of the
jacket!
i. Each member can select the tournaments in which he/she would like to fence. Refer to the USFA website
( Go to USFencing.org, click on links located on the left side of the page, click on clubs, when the map
appears, click on the state, then select the club web page you wish to review) or refer to askfred.net.
4. Each Club member who competes in official tournaments must be a member of USFA and must present his/her
membership card to register at USFA sanctioned tournaments.
i. The Club shall pay the USFA membership fee of $50.00 per person per year (up to 10 members/year).
5. Novice fencers are not ready for sanctioned tournaments encouraged to compete in informal practice competitions
between local clubs.
f. Professional Coaching:
1. Services of a coach may be contracted, renewable each term, if funds have budgeted and if the Club president and
the faculty sponsor elect to contract a coach.
i. The Faculty Sponsor will draw up the contact and see that it gets signed by the coach, the Club president,
and the faculty sponsor. A contract must be signed before a coach can provide services. A copy of the
contract shall be submitted to the Office of Recreational Sports with a request for payment by a date
specified on the contract. A contract can be written for one or more terms in a single academic year.
2. The coach must have either a College Degree in Coaching Fencing or a USFA or FCA Coaching certification in
one or more weapons and must abide by conduct standards stated in the Furman University Faculty Handbook.
3. The Coach may use equipment owned by the Fencing Club only for Fencing Club activities.
g. Student Coaching: The club shall support the development of student coaches through coaching clinics offered by both
the US Fencing Association or the US Fencing Coaches Association and the. Eligibility to receive Club funds to attend the
USFA Fencing Coaches College will be based on skill level, motivation to earn a national coaching certification, dedication
to teaching others after returning from the experience and leadership ability.
h. Requirements for funding and traveling:
1. The Furman Fencing Club must submit a budget to Dr. McFadden in the late spring of each year to be
considered for funding for the following year.
2. The Club president and the faculty sponsor must attend an organizational meeting called by Dr. McFadden in
the fall of each year in order to receive funding and to get an update on policies and procedures for the year.
3. An Acknowledgement and Release Form must be signed by a Fencing Club member who participating in the Club.
Forms are available from the Recreational Sports office, the Club President or faculty sponsor.
i. Purchases and Reimbursement of Expenses:
1. The Club President and faculty sponsor in consultation with Club members shall make decisions concerning Club purchases, expenditures, and activities.
2. All expenditure reimbursement requests shall be submitted to the Recreational Sports office in a timely manner, that is within 2 weeks of the date of the expense. Appropriate documentation (receipts) must accompany the request! (Refer to the document Guidelines for Processing Check Requests given out by Dr. McFadden.)
3. Guidelines for reimbursing tournament and travel expenses follow. As the budget decreases, reimbursement will
depend on availability of funds. A Check Request Form shall be submitted to the treasurer with all supporting
receipts attached.
i. Reimbursement for vehicle expenses for travel to a tournament shall be made at the rate of .18/mi.
ii. Reimbursement of tournament registration fees shall be made to members who fence in USFA
p. 3, FFC, Operating Principles
sanctioned tournaments and who obtain a receipt for the registration fee. Reimbursement will not be
made to those fencing in non-USFA sanctioned tournaments or to those without a receipt.
- A registration receipt form is available from the Club President or Sponsor.
ii. The Club will seek to fund expenses for one who qualifies to participate in the USFA Summer National Championships and/or the National Collegiate Tournament: Funding will be sought for AFS or the office of Recreational Sports if the Club budget cannot support the costs. If funds are available:
- The cost of a moderately priced room and moderately priced meals will be reimbursed with adequate
documentation and advanced notice.
j. Practice Facility: The Club will practice in Timmons Arena and the Old Gym during the 2008-09 academic school year.
The practice schedule has been posted on the Fencing Club site of the Recreational Sports Website.
k. Equipment Issue:
1. The Club strives to provide each participating member with high quality and safe equipment free of charge. The
Club adds equipment as the budget allows. Should there be a shortage of equipment, distribution will be made
according to participant skill level and quality of participation in practices.
2. Equipment may be issued to a Club member for use as long as he/she is an active member. Each member who
wishes to be issued equipment shall sign out each piece of equipment and shall agree to return the equipment at
the end of a use period or pay for the current replacement cost of the equipment.
i. There will be no charge for breakage or damage to equipment or wearable items due to normal use.

3. Items provided to each of the weapon participants follows:
i. Items provided for a foil fencer are a mask, jacket, 2 electric foils, one dry foil, 2 body cords, an
underarm protector, a chest protector, a lame, socks, and a carry bag.
ii. Items provided for an epee fencer are a mask, jacket, 2 electric epees, one dry epee, 2 body cords, an
underarm protector, a chest protector, socks, and carry bag.
iii. Items provided a saber fencer are a mask, a mask coil, a jacket, a lame, a cuff, 2 sabers, 2 body cords, an
underarm protector, a chest protector, socks, and a carry bag.
4. The club normally does not support the purchase of knickers, however, where there is need and available funds, an
exception to this practice will be made.
l. Care of Equipment: Each club member who has been issued equipment is responsible for washing wearable items
frequently and keeping weapons in top condition.
1. Plastrons, gloves and jackets should be laundered regularly (preferably after each wearing).
i. Wash in warn water (40 degrees C max temp) and use only neutral detergents, ie. Woolite
ii. Do not use a bleach, whitening agent or aggressive detergent
iii. Do not iron
iv. Do not machine dry, hang to dry;
v. Avoid storing wet or sweat soaked clothing in the fencing bag with masks and weapons as such encourages rust to form on the weapons and masks.
2 Masks and lamés should be washed frequently, depending on use (preferably at least once per month).
i. Mask: Submerge mask in a sink of luke warm water with a capful of Woolite. Squeeze bib
and cloth parts of the mask to clean. Rinse, towel off thoroughly, and allow to air dry.
ii. Lame: Submerge in a sink of luke warm water with a capful of Woolite. Gently squeeze water through
the lame. Rinse thoroughly but avoid wringing or stressing fabric. Put on a hang and allow to drip dry.
- Roll lame to store in fencing bag (to prevent creases from forming in the metallic fabric) or place it
in a protective rigid container..
3. The armorer shall provide a clinic on repair of electric equipment. Thereafter each fencer shall repair his/her own
dry or electric weapon.
4. A fee of $30.00 will be charged to the fencer who has checked out equipment and /or wearable items and returns
all or anyone item dirty.
m. Awards: Each Club member is expected to attend the All Sports Banquet held at the spring of the academic year and sponsored by the Office of Recreational Sports. The Club president, faculty sponsor coach shall jointly (and on occasion in consultation with Club members) determine the name of awards to be presented by the Fencing Club and recipients. That information must be submitted to Dr. McFadden when requested. Examples of awards presented in the past include but not limited to outstanding fencer, outstanding rookie (newcomer), outstanding foil fencer, outstanding epee fencer, outstanding USFA tournament participant, and most valuable participant.
n. Long Term Goals: A goal of the Club is to have each fencer participate in at least two USFA sanctioned tournaments per year, to send at least one team of 4 in at least one weapon (preferably more) to the National Collegiate competition each year and have at least one participant in the USFA Summer National Championships. that if I miss more than 50% of the scheduled practices per term, I must immediately turn in all issued equipment.
2. Work to improve my skill in the weapon (s) of my choice.
3. Participate in at least 2 competitions per year using the weapon(s) of my choice.
4. Return at the end of the use period or academic school year all equipment issued to me by the Club.
5. Repair or get repaired any equipment issued to me that becomes damaged. Pay for any piece (s) of equipment or wearable item issued to me by the Club that is lost, misplaced or becomes damaged (beyond normal use) while in my possession. A weapon blade broken during normal, responsible use will be replaced by the Club.
6. Pay a $30.00 cleaning fee if I turn in all pieces or any single piece or of issued Club equipment at the end of a
use period that is dirty.
7. Participate in the operation and governance of the Club.
