Furman University Recreational Sports
Furman University boasts one of the most active intramural sports and club sports programs in the nation. In fact, roughly two-thirds of the student body participate in intramural sports. This compares favorably to almost any college or university. Fraternities, sororities, residence hall groups and many other student organizations compete in intramural sports, including basketball, volleyball, flag football, golf, soccer, softball, bowling, tennis, sand volleyball, throughout the year. Championships are awarded and the games can be quite spirited.
But if intramural sports doesn't quite satisfy your competitive itch, you can always try a club sport. One of the fastest growing segments of the university, Furman offers 16 sports for the students: Aikido, Baseball, Boxing, Cycling, Equestrian, Fencing, Lacrosse (M&W), Power and Fitness, Rugby (M&W), Soccer (M&W), Swimming, Team Handball (W), Tennis, Triathlon, Ultimate Frisbee, and Volleyball (W). Many of the participants in these programs take their sport as seriously as scholarship athletics. The teams are also well coached and organized. Most of the club sports at Furman are coordinated or coached by Furman faculty and staff, some of whom still compete and are recognized as top authorities in their sport.
For example, Philosophy professor David Shaner, who manages the Akido sports club studied the martial art exclusively during an intense two-year period in Japan.
Tony Caterisano, a health and exercise science professor who coordinates the power and fitness club, placed second in the World championships with a 370 lb. bench press for the Master's division. Scott Murr, a health and exercise science professor who founded the running and fitness club has competed in more than a 100 triathlons and several Iron Man competitions since graduating from Furman in 1984.
And John Roberts, a former regional all-star rugby player, coaches one of Furman's most popular club sports men's and women's rugby.
