Junior Christopher Turlington Awarded Goldwater Scholarship for 2009-10 Year

 

GREENVILLE, S.C.—Christopher Turlington, a Furman University junior from Mills River, N.C., has been awarded a prestigious Goldwater Scholarship for the 2009-2010 academic year.

Turlington was one of 278 sophomores and juniors from around the nation selected as Goldwater Scholars. The one- and two-year scholarships cover the cost of tuition, fees, books, and room and board up to a maximum of $7,500 a year.

The Goldwater Scholarship Program was established by Congress in 1986 to address the need for outstanding students to pursue careers in mathematics, the natural sciences and engineering. The scholarship program is considered the premier undergraduate award of its type.

It is named for five-term U.S. Sen. Barry Goldwater, who ran for president on the Republican ticket in 1964. Now into its third decade, the foundation has awarded 5,801 scholarships worth approximately $56 million.

Turlington, a chemistry major at Furman, is a 2006 graduate of West Henderson High School. He won the Furman Freshman Chemistry Award to begin his college career, and has also received Duke Scholar, Dreyfus Scholar and Farmer Scholar awards.

He is a member of the American Chemical Society and has been a freshman adviser and resident assistant. He also participates in Campus Outreach. He is he son of Leon and Lynn Turlington of Mills River.
