Furman Student Kathleen DeLoach Has Summer Internship Working In Canada

| Furman student Kathleen DeLoach spent the summer working with Dr. Keith Martin, a physician and a member of the Canadian Parliament. | GREENVILLE, S.C. - Kathleen DeLoach, a Furman University senior from Savannah, Ga., completed an internship in Ottawa, Canada this summer with the Honourable Keith Martin, a physician and member of the Canadian Parliament who has focused his legislative career on health-related issues.
During the internship, DeLoach and Dr. Martin co-authored an op-ed on organ donations that appeared in the Ottawa Citizen in June. Titled "Help Save a Life," the piece encouraged Canadians to become organ donors. "Organ donation is a health-care problem that suffers from neglect," the two wrote, "but each of us can do our part. Let's fight a battle we can win that will save lives."
DeLoach, a political science and communication studies major at Furman, participated in the internship program as part of the Furman's Richard W. Riley Institute of Government, Politics and Public Leadership. Martin represents British Columbia in the Canadian Parliament.
A Dean's List student at Furman, DeLoach received the university's Freshman Leadership Award in 2001. She is a member of Phi Eta Sigma, a freshman honorary, and Pi Sigma Alpha, a political science honorary. She has also had internships with the District Office of Congressman Jack Kingston (R-Georgia) in Savannah and with the American Cancer Society in Washington, D.C.
She is scheduled to graduate from Furman in the spring of 2004. After graduation, she plans to earn a law degree and a Ph.D. in Bioethics and work in the legal/political profession dealing with medical policies and lobbying for patients' rights.
